BEWARE. I had Blue Flame come out because my 13 year old furnace had started blowing only cool air. The serviceman looked at the furnace and said that the control panel was flashing a “double blink” which meant that the entire panel needed to be replaced. He said that would be $1,286.00 plus tax and would take 9 days to get the part. Given the age of my furnace, he recommended that I replace the entire furnace which would be $4,000.00 to get one comparable to what I have.
Fortunately, I did not feel comfortable and decided to get a second estimate. The second company was able to come out the same day and said the “double blink” meant that the control switch was stuck in the open position. (The information was both on the control panel in small letters and also clearly in the manual which was hanging on the furnace). The repair person tapped the control switch causing it to unstick and I had heat! He said I should replace the switch since it might stick again and the part was $39.00!
I came very close to just replacing the furnace initially, but did not because I was uneasy about a few things:
I had Blue Flame come out last fall to do routine annual maintenance on my furnace because they had a good special and were rated highly on Angie’s list. The service person (same as on second call) was extremely critical of the company that had done the annual maintenance the previous 11 times saying they had done a terrible job. This seemed unprofessional and it was unsettling at the time to feel I had wasted all that money using a reputable company that was also well rated on Angie’s list.
(The person who eventually repaired my furnace said it looked like it had been well maintained and showed only normal wear and tear for its age.)
When I initially called to schedule the repair, the Blue Flame secretary mentioned that her records showed the service person had recommended that I replace the furnace when he did the cleaning last fall. He certainly did not say that to me and I discovered that he had written it at the bottom of the email receipt he sent later. I was shocked to think they would recommend replacing a furnace that had never had even one problem.
When discussing the replacement furnace, the service person told me that if I ordered it right then, I would get a 5% “efficiency” discount. This felt like a pressure technique to me (he assured me it was not).
The supervisor later apologized saying that the service person had not taken enough time looking up the codes for the control panel and had made a mistake. They refunded my $141.26 for the service call. Everyone I talked with in the Blue Flame office was very nice and they came in a timely manner. I’m sure they would have replaced my furnace quickly and efficiently as well, but I have to wonder how many of their satisfied Angie’s customers really needed all the work that was performed.
He did an exceptional job and offered us a very reasonable price.
We highly recommend Justin to anyone that requires heating & air conditioning services.
Thank you very much!
