When we were installing the stove, it became clear that J.D. had sold us eight feet of porcelain stovepipe. Since the stove top is 26 inches high, only ca. 5 ½ feet of stove pipe is required for installation in a room with a standard eight foot ceiling. Therefore, J.D. sold us ONE TWO FOOT SECTION OF STOVEPIPE MORE THAN REQUIRED FOR THIS ISNTALLATION - at an additional cost of $174. When we called J.D. to inform him that he had ordered one section of stovepipe more than was needed he curtly asserted “I order whatever the customer said” and “Vermont Castings will not accept returns of porcelain stovepipe.” When we then reminded him that we did not order eight feet of stovepipe, but had indicated that the stove would be installed in a room with a standard eight foot ceiling it was clear that he realized his mistake - but instead of admitting, and accepting responsibility for, his error he again curtly said “Vermont Castings will not accept returns of porcelain stovepipe.” When we pointed out that this was his error and that he should accept responsibility and refund us the $174 we overpaid as a result, his yet again simply asserted “Vermont Castings will not accept returns of porcelain stovepipe.” In the end, on a sale of nearly $4,800 J.D. would not accept responsibility for HIS error and forced the customer (us) to absorb the $174 overcharge that was the result. Although the Pagosa Peak Custom Fireplaces website ([*** Link removed ***] declares: “Customer service is our #1 priority!” we experienced a clearly unethical transaction. Buyer beware of J.D. and Pagosa Peak Custom Fireplaces!

We originally met JD Ward and his crew in 2010 when we contracted with him to install a new gas fireplace in our cabin in Pagosa Springs.  He and Matt were very responsive, prompt and thorough in their bidding and responsive to our requests regarding the fireplace design.  Their work was outstanding and the fireplace is beautiful, the source of heat for the room and is a source of compliments from any guest to our cabin.  JD has continued to be available for technical support as we've learned how to maximize heat and lower our propane gas bills.  JD and Matt were so responsive, resourceful and did such great work, that we subsequently contracted with them to tear off and rebuild the porch to the cabin.  This involved redesigning the roof line and porch supports, and adding river rock and wood columns to support the porch structure.  They designed river rock and flagstone steps.  The work was done timely, within the bid amount, with the finished product absolutely beautiful.    In both cases they sent pictures of the work in progress, kept us appraised of their work, were careful about not tracking in dirt/mud/snow, and cleaned up their work areas.
We highly recommend Pagosa Peaks Fireplace and JD (and Matt) as honest, hardworking, reliable, resourceful and trustworthy, who completed both of our jobs on time while we were out of town at our home and away from the cabin.  Without hesitation we will use them again for future projects (such as an outdoor firepit).

This job went really well from start to finish.  If I ever need their service again I would rehire them.  They responded to my phone calls within ten minutes most of the time and always answered my questions in a way that I could understand.  The entire work crew was very professional and did an outstanding job.
