The entire process of getting our basement finished was difficult. The company struggles to keep experienced project managers and every subcontractor that came to do work needed to fix things. The project was completed months after it was supposed to be and we had to babysit the entire process. This company is really good at selling the project and getting the business, but when it comes to doing the work, it is a struggle. The plumbers made a significant mistake and one year later, our bathroom had to be completely gutted. We had over $12,000 in damage and Basement Finishing Colorado didn't seem to care. They won't return our calls. They have a two year warranty for defects and damages, but this doesn't mean that they will be involved in the process to help rebuild or determine how costs to fix the damage will be covered. They did get us in touch with the plumber, who admitted fault, but he has insurance through a less than reputable company. Save yourself a huge headache and avoid this company. It is worth paying a bit more for a company that is much more reputable.

Basement Finishing Colorado
I found this company at a home show at the convention center and thought they would be good fit for the work I needed. They have years of experience and in fact their motto is ?Basement finishing, it?s all we do!? and they are really nice people, so I was comfortable entering in to a contract. Steve gave me a drawing of the plans and advised me on what had to be done to make the installation pass building code. It was a lot of work to be sure. They got it done, with some extra time and difficulties, but done non the less.
There had to be a way out of the basement in case of fire so an egress had to be dug along the foundation and a big hole cut through the cement. I thought I would like a kind of windoor that opened to the inside but they said the only ones available were crank ones that opened outward into the hole along the foundation. I looked on line and found a company that makes ones that do open inside either to the right or left, it took about 10 min to find what I wanted. I thought it odd they knew nothing about this windoor. Well, they didn?t get the one I wanted, but I have the one that has a crank, much slower to open.
When I moved in to this house, the basement and other parts had some mold which I had removed. That company had done a ?flood cut? which removed two feet of drywall all around the walls. The plan to Basement Finishing was to cover this gap with a nice wainscot to about 3 or 4 feet. I did NOT want more dry wall going up incase of another flood as dry wall will wick water up. I didn?t want to pay for the drywall and then cover it with the wainscot. But, the dry wall went in so with that done against my wishes, I don?t have the wainscot that would have made the main room in the basement look better. I also waned a certain finish on the walls called ?Knock down?, I like the random designs of this. I talked to Steve the manager, we both talked to the painter guy and well, I now have the regular orange peel finish that is so common and again against my wishes. Seems it?s hard to get folks that can do a job with a variance from what they know.
With all the 'experience' they say they have, I would have thought the process would have been more professional.
They put in a very nice acoustical ceiling that they had problems with because the basement is not square but it worked well. It helps deaden any echo sounds. They moved a pellet stove out of the way and put it right back where I wanted it which was nice and I now have a wet bar that matches my kitchen with the same style granite counter and cupboards.
The electrical man was also very nice. He had to almost rewire the whole thing because of a previous owner had wired it with no regard to the building codes. It took more expense and time but it got done and I can dim the lights and there are a couple 3 way switches so I can operate the lights from different parts of the basement. One problem is that in the bedroom, there are two ceiling lights on the one circuit and can?t be operated independently. The solution was a pull switch on each light to cut it out if need be.
The plumbing company Basement Finishing uses had done the new sink in the wet bar. They tied the drain in to the main pipe and they actually took out the cleaning access cap when they put the drain in! I had to complain that this isn?t how it should be done. They should have know this of course. They came back to reinstall the drain access. The other plumbing errors were also fixed and so far no problems.
They forgot to include a cable hook up for the bed room and this wasn't thought of until the walls and ceiling were finished, so, they couldn't put one in. They just...forget things. Almost like they've never done it before!
The furnace needed to be turned 180 degrees and the water heater had to be repositioned in the rebuild. This is no small deal and it added to the cost and time to the schedule. It seemed to be ok and in fact the furnace heated all winter, but come early spring I tried the air conditioner and the whole thing just quit! Now it wouldn?t even come on. I had enough of this company so I went to Angie?s List to find a better heating company, or one with a high rating and called Builders heating. You can see my report for them on the site.

Response from Basement Finishing Colorado Inc
"(Removed Member Name), Thank you for your honest & constructive feedback. We always appreciate the opportunity to improve our customer service and address any concerns. We have reviewed your file and have concluded the following: Windoor – After an industry standard casement egress window was installed, you decided you would prefer a window that opens to the interior. We offered to order the windoor that you requested, but after explaining the higher cost and the extended time it would add to the job because of the special order, you agreed to the window we had already installed. Wainscot – Decorative wainscot was included in your bid. Wainscot requires a backing in order to install it. After having the Denver Building Inspector out to assess the situation, it was determined by all (the inspector, BFC and you) that everything was installed correctly and according to code and you opted not to do the wainscot. Therefore the cost was credited back to you on your final invoice. Knock-Down/Orange Peel Texture: We typically install a knock-down texture finish in our basements, but in this case we did an orange peel to match all the pre-existing surfaces, keeping continuity throughout. We apologize that this was not to your liking. Plumbing – The cleaning access cap was not required by code but we reinstalled it per your request. The sink access is a cleanout portal, thus making the additional cleanout unnecessary. Plumbing was inspected & approved by the Denver Building Department. Cable hook-up – The contract included a pre-wire for 5 wire surround sound audio, which was installed. The extra cable outlet was not requested until after drywall finish & texture was complete. We offered to install it as a work change order which you declined. Furnace – As you said, the furnace worked great all winter. We could not have known that there was a problem with the A/C until you started using it in the summertime. Had you contacted us, we would have happily taken care of any and all issues, as it is covered under our Lifetime Warranty. Any and all issues that came about during the project were immediately address and resolved. Once the project was complete, we were under the impression that you were happy and completely satisfied. Considering how many compliments you paid us throughout your letter, mentioning the very nice acoustical ceiling, the pellet stove being put right back where you wanted it, the wet bar that matches your kitchen, the friendly electrician that solved your lighting issues, and more…we were surprised by the D rating that you gave us and we hope that you will reconsider and raise the rating. Best Regards, Steve and Leslie, BFC"

My son and I started this project thinking we would do all the finish work. I had one company provide an estimate and when I told them I might want to do some of the finishing work myself, they almost refused to talk any further. Not Basement Finishing Colorado. They provided an estimate that broke out the finish parts and I was able to select what I wanted to do. I did do some work - I purchased and finished the cabinets myself and saved some. I also tiled the bathroom floor. But, in general, they did such a good job and the price was low enough that it didn't make sense for me to do more activities. The nice thing was it was my decision and they worked with me with what ever I decided.

Everything went excellent. We did have a few small issues with the door but they were quick to come out those. They were very responsive. They were really nice to work with. The office staff and crew were excellent. Overall, it was a great experience. They were always there when they said they would be. I have no regrets with this job at all.

While this was a large and somewhat difficult job, I was disappointed that the costs went over the original estimate. I felt that the contract should have been updated as the work progressed. I still can not get this company to return my phone calls. About the only thing I was pleased with was the fact that I was left with a beautiful basement.

Overall I was disappointed with the quality of the workmanship. It took nine months to complete the project. We found the walls to be so off level, one of the doors would open by itself with any kind of movement in the room. They weren't very professional and left behind their construction debris.
