The initial energy audit went fine. He performed a blower door test and took pictures with an infrared imaging camera. The camera had a dead battery so we had to keep plugging the camera into wall outlets around the house and wait for a few minuets each time we plugged it to let it warm up. After looking around in the attic he packed up and left. A few days later we got the report with the infrared pictures and the standard energy update recommendations (nothing we didn't already know and is not part of every list on the internet). For this he charged $270. That was ok assuming we were going to get the DTE rebates for the work we already had planned.
I asked at the time how long we had to get the work done. He said one year.
During the next few months we completed all but one of the items we had planned and were just waiting on an insulation contractor for one last item. 2 months before the year was up I contacted him again to make sure everything was in order as to not miss the year deadline. During this call he informed me that the program was canceled as of last month. I followed up with DTE and found out that DTE contacted the contractors and told them that the program was ending and that they needed to get their client's applications in by sometime the month before. When I asked INFRARED ENERGY ANALYSIS why he didn't notify us that the program was ending they just said well you didn't let me know you had done any of the work so you were "...long off the radar".
I had mentioned that maybe we could still get my application in because maybe they would not get all the submissions they were expecting and would still have some extra funds to cover my application. He agreed and even commented on the fact that he had messed up on few $1000 worth of rebate for other people that he submitted to the wrong energy provider. So I guess we are not their only clients that he lost money for.
His final response to us was "Moving out of state in two weeks and I'm extremely busy, please contact another DTE qualified contractor for your test-out." Thanks for loosing us $650 and others $1000s in rebates. Maybe this is why he is moving out of the state?
