My primary contact was Waldo (nickname). He came out and did the estimate, got the crew lined up to do the work, and followed up with me every step of the way. If I had any questions, he answered them within 24 hours, usually the same day.
The company that was subcontracted (by Gold) to deliver the shingles and put them onto the roof agreed to deliver them in multiple loads, since I had a prior mishap with heavy loads on my driveway. I'm still waiting for this subcontractor to fix a gutter section they mangled a bit; I hope that gets done soon.
The Gold crew worked very hard, and were always polite. Every day, they cleaned up the area before they left. I found only a few nails to pick up. They isolated and fixed a problem with the original roof that had in the past resulted in some water damage in the garage. This is subjective, but I felt better knowing these guys were doing the work; I trusted them.
A roof antenna had to be removed temporarily. Except for a CATV connector, they did a great job putting it back on exactly as it was. Waldo came out and helped during my antenna troubleshooting, and while on site found a few nails that needed to be sealed better. That's just one example of his attention to details.
While fixing the CATV connector, I found that a power ventilator was not centered over the hole when it was reinstalled. Waldo came out and fixed it, no excuses. I found a few shingle scraps in the attic, below the fan and ventilator holes - I bet if their arms had been longer the crew would have cleaned that up too.
John and Lucas from Gold Roofing checked my roof, then and we sat down at my back porch to discuss the findings. I had just received a brand new box of cigars, so I was smoking them and offered them to the two, which they accepted, which was cool. John indicated that there were definite signs of hail damage and showed me a few pictures of the damaged area that were marked with chalk. I said great, and asked him something like "now what?" He asked about my insurance and to see the papers. I bought it out and got phone # as well as information regarding my deductibles, etc. John had me sign a form that resembled a contract with Gold Roofing, but explained that it only indicates my preference of company I wish to use, and if the insurance company didn't cover the cost of repair, then I didn't need to pay anything. It scanned over it and seemed fair, so I signed and called the insurance company. They indicated that my claim has been started and that an adjuster would give me a call.
When the adjuster scheduled the time, I called John to let him know of the time and date. John was present when the adjuster came to check on my roof. The adjuster and I had a chat after his evaluation and indicated that he had totaled the roof and the insurance will cover the whole cost of replacing the shingles, along with code-updates that were needed. I then got the estimate and a check from the adjuster. John asked me for a copy of the estimate and I faxed it to him. We scheduled a meeting to go over the roofing material and options for upgrades.
At the meeting, John and Lucas brought different roofing materials for me choose and informed me of the upgrades that were available. I chose no additional upgrades, as Gold Roofing had already upgraded the materials for free. I did pick out the roofing material, as well as its color to start the process. During this meeting, I indicated that there was a water leak though my chimney that shows up through my fireplace when it rained, and that I'd like for them to look into the repairs for it. I made several points that I didn't have too much money reserved for that repair, but I needed to know how bad the damages were and what it would cost before it's repaired. Both John and Lucas reassured me that my roof seemed to be in a pretty good shape and that, in their opinion, the damage wouldn't be severe. So we agreed to proceed and they would let me know when they would start, which was when the materials arrived. And somewhere along the line, John had also explained that it would only take a day to replace the shingles.
The work crew arrived the day after Memorial Day, and as John had indicated, it only took them a day to replace the shingles. However, neither John nor Lucas arrived with the crew that morning, and I was extremely concerned about the leak in the chimney and whether they had relayed my concerns to the crew. The work crew finished-up the work and no one had contacted me about the leak repairs that day. I was still very concerned, but hoped for the best.
I didn't hear from the Gold Roofing folks till the Wednesday of the following week, and on that Wednesday morning, it was raining pretty hard. I checked the fireplace, and sure enough, the water was leaking, this time worse than before and I could hear the water running in the chimney. I had injured my foot over the weekend, so was headed to see my doctor that morning when John called. I told him about the leak and he indicated that he would check it out right away. During my visits with my primary doctor, radiology folks for x-ray, and a trip to the orthotic specialist, John had gone up to the roof during the heavy rain and applied the sealing materials around the chimney. When I got back home, the rain had subsided, and I didn't see or hear the water leak from the chimney. He called to let me know what he had done to remedy the situation for the time being, but that he would send some one out later to make the sealant application look more aesthetically pleasing as he had done a quick and rough job. I was very pleased that John had responded immediately, but were still concerned about the leak.
That weekend, another heavy rain hit during the night, and as I went to check my fireplace, I noticed the leaks. I videotaped it, just as I had done with other leaks, then called John and left a voice mail indicating what I had observed. He got back to me, I believe the next day, and told me that he would send a repair person out to check it out during the week. I got a call back from John later that week with a report from the repair guy that examined the roof, and indicated that in his opinion, the leak was not coming from the seam where the roof meets the chimney. I was relieved of that, but knew the problem still existed and expressed my concern. John then suggested that we take a garden hose and spray around the roof and chimney to see where the leak may be coming in, to which I agreed.
John and Lucas came out and we performed the garden hose test as I checked on the fireplace, but no leaks were visible. Then when Lucas sprayed the water directly into the chimney, the water started to gush in. The conclusion was that the seals around the roof and chimney joint as well as the materials around the chimney flue were no longer the culprit. The leak was most likely coming from the rain getting in directly into the flue, passed the cap that was on the flue due to winds. It made sense, but I still wasn't completely convinced. They reapplied/fixed the previous sealant application that day to make it look more aesthetically pleasing, and we squared up on our finances. To commemorate the end of the project, I gave each of them a cigar as we had stated our initial project smoking cigars together.
It's now the end of July, over a month after the garden hose test, and we've had a few heavy rains with strong winds. I'm happy to report that there were no leaks in the fireplace! So, I believe the last sealant application solved my chimney leak and I'm very pleased with how John and Lucas persevered to take care of the situation. So overall, the roof looks great, the leak is gone, and I feel both John and Lucas went out of their way to take care of my concern. I would highly recommend Golf Roofing to my friends, and would insist they deal with John and/or Lucas for their roofing project(s).
This by far was one of the best experiences I've had with a roofer or contractor of any kind. I'd highly recommend Gold Roofing to anyone looking to repair or replace a roof.
I had the roof done by a local company after a hail storm and they did a poor job, you could say they slaughtered my roof. After getting several estimates and talking to contractors , I decided this roofing thing is truely a "shot in the dark" so we put all the names in a hat and pulled out Gold Roofing . Our roof is finally done . I just want to urge home owners to get involved. Do your home work, because it's not cheap and you want the products installed right. After it's all said and done, I am satisfied with the product we ordered and service I received from Gold Roofing.
.samples to make the decision easy. The house has a new roof and the price was
fair. I have not had enough wet weather to make sure it does not leak so I
can’t speak to that. Our insurance didn’t cover the code upgrades and drip edge
was needed to pass inspection. Gold Roofing paid for the parts and installation
as part of the project. They also paid for the gutters they damaged while
installing the roof (see below). They also added water barrier in places that
were suspect to pooling. They painted the roof vents to match, a nice touch. They
started when they said they would and showed up on time. The emails and phone
calls were responded to in a timely manner.
The not so good: They spent over 3 days on the roof and I
had to call them back because they forgot to do the shed. The roof failed 2
inspections. The first for a few simple items, Caulk on some nails and a few
shingles were broken in the process of installation. The second failed inspection
was from damage from the workers that fixed the problems from the first failed
inspection. Not just a few spots mind you, but we had almost 30 chalk marks on
the roof pointing out damage from our attentive inspector. This caused my wife
to have to schedule the extra inspections and take time to be at the house when
that happened. One of the roof vents was completely smashed from hail damage
and was simply painted (they did replace it but I had to point it out). I also
discovered several places that the gutters were damaged in the process of the
installation but again I had to point them out. We finally got the job competed
in just under one month and several emails and phone calls.
Gold Roofing contacted me around the first of July and indicated they were helping other homeowners in my neighborhood with their roofs and would I like them to look at my roof to see if there was any damage. I agreed and Jon went on the roof to look it over. After approximately half an hour he came down and said I diffently had hail damage.
So I called my insurance company and they came out and also indicated that there was damage. Gold Roofing brought out samples and I submitted the sample to the HOA for approval. Once I received the approval I called Gold Roofing and with in a couple weeks I had a new roof.
Gold Roofing was good to work with. They were professional and followed up all their work.
