General Remodeling
This company came recommended from a friend, so we decided to contact him for an estimate.
The owner would not provide an estimate for free. For $150 he said he'd provide a sketch of the basement plan/layout after visiting our house and measuring, etc. He did provide the sketch - literally a sketch on a note pad. The other estimates we received were accompanied with a basement layout, too in a "cleaner" more legible format and for free. The owner and I also got into a debate about if permits were necessary for the construction. I'm a believer in permitting the work because I've worked at the local county Land Use Dept. for years and biggest property messes I encountered came from not permitting livable space (especially if the owners want to sell the property someday). Permitting the job was an add-on to the cost estimate and he indicated that he would rather us take care of that piece of the project. The cost estimate was in the general ballpark as the other estimates we recieved, but the reason we didn't hire this company was because of philosophical and personality differences.
