The countertop and kitchen sink installations were fiascos. He bid based on his assumption that the cabinets we had, which the countertop would go on, would be level. He realized this was not the case, but rather than doing it right (leveling the cabinet tops), he cut corners and shimmied in places. He also broke the countertop because it slid off his saw horse. We showed us the break and told us he could fix it with some kind of colored epoxy (we didn't give him the chance). He installed the countertop over the shims on the cabinet in a way that was not secure (there was measurable 'give' in the middle of the countertop). He installed the sink incorrectly. It was slipshod work and unprofessional. We ended up paying him for the work minus the cost of the countertop and paid someone else (Home Depot) to come reinstall it correctly. In the end, the main problem was that Jay didn't seem to have much experience either in bidding correctly (he way underestimated the scope of the project) or in properly installing the countertop. Once he realized his mistake, he made sure to let us know he was losing money on the project, and he cut corners to finish it as quickly as possible. Overall, not a good experience. We learned the hard way. The positive that came out of it is that this experience convinced us to use Angie's List from now on before hiring anyone.
