Eventually, I was able to get a hold of Oscar, the owner(?) and main contact. I sent him images of the problem on Oct 10 (as REQUESTED in our phone conversation), but he didn't even reply to the email until Oct. 22. - where in he asked me for my address ONLY (something that had been previously provided in the original order, the emails AND in a voicemail). After providing the address, Oscar disappeared again and while I sent emails and made phone calls, it wasn't until early November that he could send someone out to do the work. With each note, I expressed the urgency of the work - as the rental unit's crack grew and grew, until it finally broke and much of the ceiling collapsed - which helped my bill grow :D
Eventually, Oscar provided a quote that was completely inconsistent w/ the Angie's List deal. Note the deal offered 3 Man Hours of work, while the quote was a full job. In the end, he billed me $499 (rather than the $109), completed the job over two weeks because he couldn't commit workers to the job long enough to finish it.
Finally, once work was done, he began to harass me with a barrage of text messages and emails - requesting that I hurry up and send him the money.
Honestly, I don't even want to send him a check, but I feel like I have no recourse :(
"This client agreed to pay the agreed amount of $499 he knew perfectly that we were very busy and he opted to continue with this company , it surprised me his misleading version to not pay at the end"
"I could never meet you but I apreciate your comment thank you Oscar"
11/13- I contacted Oscar w/Sun Drywall trying to set a time for him to estimate and do work. It took a week and no appt time was confirmed. See attached email communications. Oscar never provided his cell phone number.
11/20- I emailed Oscar to find out if he was coming since he never gave me a time. He showed up at 11:30 to look at the job. Oscar said he would email an estimate Wednesday night and that someone would be at my house between 7:30 and 8:00 on Thursday morning to start the work. I specifically asked him to include in the bid the cost of replacing a base board that had been broken. He was also supposed to replace the insulation that had been removed by the fireman.
11/21-8:15 am and no one has shown up or called. I finally had Oscars cell # so I text Oscar for a status. He says that he is at Home Depot buying supplies. He says that I have to approve the bid amount before he can come and start work . I pulled up the bid and it was for $450 which seemed high since I had already paid for 3 hours of labor. I told Oscar this and he said that the coupon did not apply to this job????? He said he would reduce the price to $350. I asked him to break down the estimate into labor hours and material cost and he did not reply. He called to ask if the estimate was ok. At this point, we had been going back and forth for over a week and I just wanted the work done so I said ok. He finally showed up at my house at 10:15. Oscar and another young man were in my garage for appox. 2 hours. I did not watch them work because it was very cold. They told me when they were leaving and said that someone would be back the next day to apply drywall mud. After they left, I reviewed the work that had been done and was surprised at how sloppy it looked. The holes that were being repaired were covered but not neatly and in many places there were areas where there were 2 inch gaps between the old and new dry wall. The old drywall had not been cut so that the new drywall could be evenly fitted into the spaces. My husband and I could have done the job in that amount of time and had the new drywall fitting much better.
11/22 4:00 pm Oscar shows up to apply drywall mud. He works in my garage for approx.. 1 hour. When he is finished, he asks for payment and says we should be able to paint over the mud once it is dry and it will look fine. I ask about the baseboard and he says that he didn?t buy one but he could fix it for another $50. Out of frustration, I give him a check and allow him to leave. I wish now that my husband had been home to review the work before I paid Oscar. The drywall mud is applied thickly and has application streaks thru it, it is not smooth like the rest of the garage walls. The work appears very messy and hurried and due to the thickness and cold temperatures, many areas developed deep cracks. I am now very concerned about the insulation, wondering if it was replaced or not??
11/25- I email Oscar asking him for a receipt showing the cost of materials he used including the type of insulation that he purchased. I told him I needed a specific invoice breaking down cost of labor and materials so that I could submit the invoice to my insurance company or reimbursement. I also told him about the cracks. Oscar replies that he can fix the cracks but that he cannot give me a receipt for materials because he used materials out of his workshop but says he will send me an invoice. I wonder what he bought at Home Depot? I email Oscar again telling him that we are very unhappy with his work but to please submit an invoice.
11/26 Oscar emails to say that he and his crew are now on Thanksgiving vacation and he will get back to me on Monday. This man is a joke, unprofessional, irresponsible and does crappy work. I have received estimates from 3 other contractors since joining Angie?s List a month ago and all of them have been wonderful with the exception of this man. He should NOT be on your referral list. We wasted $109 plus $350 having work done that we are totally unhappy with and even thinking about ripping out and having redone properly. I am VERY disappointed that he is someone that would be associated with the service that you are supposed to be providing.
"THIS PERSON AND HER SON INSPECT ALL WORK PERSONALY SHE THANKED ME FOR THE GOOD WORK THAT WE PERFORM SHE WROTE A CHECK PAY FOR ME , IM PERSONALY INSTALL THE INSULATION ‘’SHE SAW ME INSTALING INSULATION’’ IT WAS A VERY COLD NIGHT SEEMS THAT THE MUD FROZE I TOLD HER I GLADLY WOULD FIX IT, NEVER GAVE ME A CHANCE SHE TOLD ME THAT HER HUSBAD WILL EAZY FIXIT SHE SHOWED ARROGANT AND ASK ME TO BRAKE DOWN THE PRICE FOR LABOR AND MATERIAL AND I DID IT AFTER THAT SHE NEVER CALL ME SHE DESIDE TO CLAIM ON ANGIE’S LIST"
Oscar did not accurately tell the first guy who was hanging drywall what needed to be done, so this guy got upset as I was showing him other areas of the house that were to be repaired and finally left without finishing his job. It wasn't that big of a deal though, the finishers could take care of the small patches that the hanger didn't get to.
finishers were great, they did a good job.
Oscar told me he was done on the 24th of September - I was not at the property that day and was going out of town the next morning. I drove to the property to check the work and there were some items that were not done. I couldn't really check the entire house because I didn't have lighting in all of the rooms and it was dark. I called or texted Oscar about items that were not done and he assured me that they would be done before I got back into town and could I please pay him because it would really help him out. I thought that the rest of the job went pretty well and I trusted that he would get the other items done before I got back in town, so I left him a check - that was a mistake! When I got back in town the items were still not done. It took over 3 weeks for him to send somebody and that was after many times of somebody supposedly coming who never showed up. In the end, he still never had an access to the attic cut out or had a repair in the laundry room done. There were also a few small items that I would have had him fix or do better that I ended up doing myself or paying a painter to do prior to painting.
I liked his prices and his work was good to fair. I would have hired him again for future projects and maybe painting as well, but this was very frustrating that he put me on the back back back back burner after I did him a favor and paid before the work was completed.

On the first visit (Sept 26th) they installed the sheetrock. However, they installed the rock such the gap at the bottom varied from 1/5" to 3" versus the 3" specification. Also the cut-outs around electrical outlets were too big and therefore did not support the outlet tabs. I called Oscar (owner of Sun Drywall) to share my concerns, tell them I trimmed the bottom to match the spec, and ask they pay closer attention during the mud and texture.
On the second visit they taped and mudded the seams and tried to repair the over-sized holes. They also textured in the same visit but without first sanding/blending the underlying mud layers and that resulted in a highly visible patch job. I contacted Sun Drywall and let them know I was unhappy with the visible patch: the replicated the texture well but it did not conceal the seam.
To speed the flood-repair process, I properly sanded down the texture and the underlying mud and asked Sun Drywall to come back to better fix around the outlets and re-texture. They came back without argument, though I felt a little bit of could-shoulder from one of the workers. They sanded the seam a little further and retextured. They asked me to look at the texture and told me it would blend better once painted.
After the texture was dry, I could see that the texture did not match nearly as well as the first time. Once I painted a portion of the wall it made the issue more visible not less visible. Additionally their attempted repair around the outlets resulted in packing too much mud into the junction boxes and burying part of the outlet such that it could no longer be maintained or adjusted to the appropriate depth. Wouldn't it have been easier to just install the rock properly the first time? They also scrapped the window sill, probably while climbing in and out of the window. I feel it was unintentional, however its another fix I had to do.
At that point I decided to redo the work myself rather than requests them to come back a fourth time. I felt three attempts to get this right was enough and had some fear of retaliation. Mostly, I needed to get this done and let subsequent phases of repair progress so we could move back in.
To his credit, Oscar contacted me to ask how everything turned out on October 17th. I replied with my dissatisfaction, shared photos of the problem areas, and asked him to do a better job on the friends house to which I referred him. On October 23rd he replied saying he understood I was disappointed, asked me to not refer him further and offered that it was okay if I did not want to pay.
I slept on his offer for a couple days, then responded to thank him for his reply, agreed that I should not have to pay for the work. I offered to pay for the material portion which I estimated to be around $100.00. That night he responded that my offer was not fair and $100.00 dollars for materials was ridiculous.
I then reiterated my offer to pay him $100.00 for materials. His most recent reply is that I was being ?abusive? and that he would ?get the money in a legal way?. I want to be clear I do not feel Sun Dryall is a predatory business and I have seen their work look good at a friend?s house. I hope it simply a case of too much demand given the recent floods (my neighbors also experienced fast work and lacking quality from Sun Drywall).
In my mind the most concerning part is that he offered for me to not pay and then later is threatening me with collection through legal ways.
"Yes there was some small problems during the drywall install as normal Process at the end all made out very well in this I personally recommend the home owner please check the job before my crew leave and he tell my crew all is good, and no problems, that is why it surprise me at the time I send a invoice he refuse to pay ,I think this customer is trying to take advantage of the small problem and not pay $ 650 I did finis 5 more jobs in the same block all of them happy with the finish job no complains Also Mr. [Member name removed] refer my work to his neighbor after I finish his project her name is [Customer name removed] ; [Customer address removed] Ph [Customer phone number removed] She also give us a tip for the good work that we perform Thank you Oscar Sun drywall Inc"
He said it will be flat when it dries and you paint it. Week later it still looks like a 5inch wide ridge over the tap
After painting the area it looks perfect. Great job.
