We hired Derek with Right Touch Painting to paint the entire interior of our new house, including the kitchen cabinets. He came referred to us by a family friend (Derek’s crew painted the exterior of their house). Derek said they could do texturing (my father specifically asked during the estimate, as this was the main reason we wanted to hire this project out) Derek let us know that they could fix it. It was in our invoice, but the texture job was awful, if touched at all. After the crew was “finished,” we marked places with painters tape and Derek walked the house with my husband. He was more interested in getting his check and leaving so our concerns were brushed away. From the invoice: “•Fill All old nails/screws holes •Patch & texture all areas on ceilings & walls where needed. Kitchen Cabinets: Sand, prime & paint cabinets, doors (both sides) & drawer fronts. Hand Railing & Spindles: Sand, prime & paint.” He took off $400 and said that there was a miscommunication, and if he would have known we’d be so picky, he would have hired it out because his guys “don’t have an eye for texturing and feathering.” (Yet, he sent the same guys after our last visit to come and fix the areas. Needless to say, we didn’t have faith about how it would turn out the second time either.) We let our issues go and then a month later, our cabinets began chipping. Then, a large piece of paint came off when a baby lock didn’t stick to the paint. It became clear that the cabinets were not sanded at all. The wood looked & felt the exact same as when we bought the house. We contacted Derek to let him know we’d like him to look at everything that was done and sent pictures of paint mistakes and the paint chips on wood in numerous places. When they came out, they tried to tell us they did an amazing paint job everywhere, that they’ve only had 2 or 3 complaints on cabinets in 19 years, and that the cabinets were sanded. It appeared that they came to our house to redo only 2 cabinet doors. My father and husband got increasingly frustrated when it became clear that Derek didn’t have a solution and seemed to be standing by the sub-par work. We took the cabinets doors and drawers off ourselves, and when we did we saw many areas that weren’t painted at all. After looking at the house more closely, Derek agreed to take the cabinets off-site to redo them, and to send his guys back out for touch ups. When they came back, Derek’s crew let us know that Derek didn’t even tell them we wanted the whole house textured where needed. They stated they would have had the same guy who removed popcorn and textured one room do the whole house. Of course, this leads us to believe that Derek was trying to get away with not hiring out for texture. When we let Derek know about our issues with the cabinets, he said he’d “make it right” and “he always does the right thing.” We’re clearly not finding that to be the case. They also painted our mantle, our stair railing, window sills, cabinets, and doors. If they didn’t sand the cabinets the first time, and only sanded the cabinet doors and drawer faces, we know the lifespan on all these other wood things are short. We hung the cabinets back up ourselves, and had to touch up paint on a few places that didn’t have paint at all. Days later, we have yet to hear from Derek. At this point, there are still spots we have to touch up with both paint and texture. There are still places where we need to figure out how to get paint off of our carpets and laminate flooring. Apologies, ownership of mistakes, and compassion go a long way when you work with customers. I suggest going with anyone else for your painting needs.

Response from Right Touch Painting
It is unfortunate to see your review. We really thought we had gone above and beyond expectations by repainting all your kitchen cabinet doors and drawer fronts, as well as texturing all the areas on the walls and repainting the walls for no charge at all. Sorry that we could not meet your expectations and we hope the best for you.

They did real good work and followed through. I've actually had known Derrick he did some painting years ago when he worked for a roofing company. He did some work for my neighbors too. He comes and inspects. He's a good guy, real good guy. I've got a complex of 271 townhouses and we have a very strong homeowners association. You can't get by with peeling paint. Other people were getting citations and he gave quotes to do just the pieces such as the trims and etc.
