They have long term loyal customers. They are a little hole in the wall but they are loved by people who know about them. They are not going to break the bank. They are not going to rip you off and tell you to buy something you don't need. They are prompt, reliable and affordable. I am pretty sceptical about car repair people but I have never felt that I couldn't trust them. I last stopped by a couple months ago for a check up because the maintenance light came on. They checked the brakes and changed the oil and they did a hundred thousand mile check. There was something that I needed that was like two hundred and fifty dollars but I can't remember what it was. I would give them all "A"s.
The BIG reason why I wouldn't recommend them is what happened afterwards: the check engine light turned on for my car and the error code for for the EGR valve. They told me it would cost $600 to replace the part. I had no idea what the EGR valve was, so I went online and found that there actually was a manufacturer recall for my car because there was a design flaw in the intake manifold which caused carbon to build up in the back of the manifold. Because of this clogged component, the EGR valve code was thrown. Unfortunately my car was 5,000 miles past the recall specifications, but an Acura specialist like Gaylords should have known that the EGR valve wouldn't fix the problem in the first place. To make matters worse, they told me the EGR valve was difficult to get to, but in fact it's held on by two bolts and sits at the back of the engine. It takes only about 15 minutes to take off. Fast forward several years (after I removed and cleaned out the intake manifold on the car myself), and my MDX that I just purchased is due for its 105k maintenance so I'm looking to get quotes from different shops around Denver. I figured, what the heck, this isn't diagnostic, so let's see what they charge. Part of the maintenance is replacing the spark plugs and adjusting the valves: the quote for adjusting the valves was a reasonable $$300, but I was shocked when they wanted $150 for the spark plugs, since you take the spark plugs out as part of adjusting the valves. I said this to the woman on the phone, and she said, "No, you don't. It's a totally different place on the engine." Well, with that, I realized I couldn't count on Gaylord's to ever look at one of my Acuras again.
"We have many 25+ year customers who lover our expert, honest service. In 3 decades, we have never seen complaints like hers. She came here twice with this car, both times demanding money back. She even demanded money she didn't pay, sending e-mail wanting $150 back for work that only cost $37.50. Re the leak, we took a conservative, cheaper approach, then tested & found no leak. She didn't complain about a new alleged leak for a year & still hasn't brought the car in. On her 2nd visit re random horn honk, we told her that to diagnose such an intermittent issue, we'd have to see it act up. In the 1st check, it worked fine. We saw no electrical or mechanical issues. We asked if she wanted us to look more. She ok'd 2 more hours. Although we spent several hours (& only charged 2), it did not act up. We found someone had tampered with the horn & air bag area in the past (an issue she never disclosed). We repaired a wire & noted damage done elsewhere, so there were "no guarantees on anything but the wire that was repaired" by us. No shop will guarantee anything but their own work. We never "fixed" the horn because we never saw a problem, despite much testing. We told her that on the phone & noted it on her invoice. We wish her luck in finding a new shop. We will not be bullied into paying fictional & unreasonable amounts of money after she had approved work in advance & we had gone to extraordinary length trying to find a symptom that never materialized."
