- First, Dave tried to upsell me to tile the entire backspash around my kitchen at a quoted price of $850, rather than the small job I actually wanted. He finally agreed to tile the small area for a price of $250. I was clear about the time frame in which I needed the job completed and he assured me that as soon as my choice of tile arrived, he would be able to fit me in with no problem. All was good so far.
- When the tile arrived at Home Depot, Dave said he would not have time to do the job after all, and that besides, it was charity work. When I told him that I was confused because he had previously said he could fit me in with no problem because it was such a small job, he said the only day he could do it was a day I could not be at home. When I started to say I was uncomfortable with that because everyone who has ever worked at any house I owned always had questions for me that they did not anticipate before-hand, Dave interrupted me after "I am uncomfortable with that because." He started ranting about how if I could not trust his business within my house that he didn't want to work for me. When he settled down, I told him what he had prevented me from saying previously. He then started on a rant about how he had worked on houses all over town and if I didn't trust his professionalism, then he did not want to work for me. I should have dropped him at this point. Instead, I said that I don't have a problem with the reviews I had seen on Angie's list, but I just needed to have every question addressed before they planned to come to work. Dave then agreed to do the work.
- When he came over, he apologized profusely for his outbursts, blaming a heavy work load. We discussed every possible issue we could foresee, and he planned to have his son come and do the tiling. All seemed to be good again at this point.
- When I got home the day the tile went up, I was horrified. The tile was obviously slanted. It was beautifully spaced in an offset pattern, but the entire pattern tipped slightly to one side. Over the 30" width, the tile tilts 1/4" vertically. This translates into about 1" of tip for every 10 feet of tile, or at least 1" over an entire width of counter. After Dave's previous outbursts, I was uncomfortable calling him; however, tipped tile is a problem for me. So I called. I told him I hated to make the call, that the tile was beautifully spaced in the offset pattern, and that I really hated to have to tell him that the entire pattern tipped. He asked to come out the next day, when I again would not be home.
- The next day, I received a call in which Dave told me that my counters and cabinets were tipped, but the tile was perfect. He told me he would not charge me for the job, and that I was welcome to post a review on Angie's list . He stated that he would fight whatever I posted. He finished his call with a wonderful little insult, saying that he believes I have "serious mental problems."
- My handyman came by to review the tile for me. He and I used his 4' level to check the cabinets and counters: they are level. He agreed that the tile was not straight.
- I will be pleasantly surprised if Dave Hanson does not retaliate against me. He seemed very comfortable making accusations, insulting me, and threatening me. I find his behavior to be entirely unprofessional. Meanwhile, I'm left with a free, but slightly slanted tile backsplash.
