My master bath shower was over 20 years old with a plastic surround. McHugh Tike and stone removed the plastic, enlarged the shower and installed tile floor to ceiling. They tiled the shower floor and put in a new drain.
I am a very happy customer.
Was handled right away. In a very professional manner.
Timely quote. Timely work.
Looks great.
Worked well with me. Put up with my dog. Cleaned up every day.
Removed old shower. Installed new shower pan, backer board, tile, and shower fixtures.
I purchased the tile and the shower fixture.
We bought our old, but extensively remodeled, home two years ago. Yet after only two years of use the shower was showing numerous signs of failure, including floor tile cracks around the shower curb, cracks in the curb itself and in the shower floor and grout falling out.
When Mr. McHugh came to evaluate the situation on-scene he described to us in clear, fully-understandable terms how and why the tile failures were happening. His explanation was articulate and clear and it was apparent to me that he understood how this kind of installation needed to be done and what had been done improperly to cause the failures we were experiencing.
His employee, Steve, who did the bulk of the work, was equally experienced and, throughout the project, explained what he was doing and why. The original contractor had used wood in locations where moisture damage was almost certain to happen; non-galvanized screws, susceptible to oxidation had contributed to the problem; drywall had been used where waterproof materials were called for and the shower pan originally installed had not been properly waterproofed. At every point it was clear to us that we being told the truth by an expert. There was no attempt to increase the scope of work for financial reasons and the entire job was completed within the originally quoted price, including the cost of all tile and other materials.
Steve was scrupulous about avoiding damage and protecting our house, carpets, and so on, from dirt.
In the middle of the project we had to leave for 4 weeks, causing work to stop. Mr. McHugh made a point of adjusting his schedules so that work could resume only 2 days after our return.
McHugh Tile is a high quality, expert contractor of integrity.
We were pleased and we didn't feel that they rushed the job. They gave great input, suggestions and their professional opinions on many things. We were kept informed throughout the process of the job. Matt was often on the job site working and if not was readily available for our questions. He was great to work with.
We were very satisfied with the finished job. Matt's tile layer was awesome!!
There were two guys on this job in a small work area; the owner and his helper. They didn't smoke and they came to work clean and in clean clothes.
By the end of the first day, September 30th, they damaged everything I asked them not to. The owner was unwilling to take responsibility for any of the damages telling me that there was nothing they could do. If anything there was a chance they would only get damaged further. They scratched the top of both the new washer and dryer, dinged trim around doorways and existing cabinet doors and scratch the oiled rubbed bronze outlet cover in the hallway.
The following day he made a construction design decision, and even though I was in the house, they did not ask my opinion. They finished the shower area leaving us a 26" wide shower. You couldn't stand facing the shower head with your hands on your head to wash hair in a shower that is only 26" wide. Code is 30". Mr. McHugh used another code which states that a curb of a shower should be 15" from the center of the toilet drain.
Since he did NOT pull a permit for this remodel, it seemed it would be more important to make the shower an appropriate width since the toilet still had ample room. When I mentioned that the shower floor was too narrow he was again unhappy with me.
They did fix their error, and widened the shower floor but they charged us anyway saying that that felt they were being fair.
They did show up promptly, and made an effort to protect things from their work process however I ended up doing the majority of the papering and protecting of my home to keep any more damage from happening. This included wrapping the already damaged washer and dryer with a moving blanket.
When they took out our shower door, drywall, etc., they didn't empty their pickup bed and every time they came and went out of our neighborhood, bits of that shower door safety glass fell on the driveway, sidewalk and street. I was out there sweeping up the mess each day it happened.
Our experience with this company was stressful leaving us with damages to brand new appliances that they refuse to repair and many dings on trim and existing cabinetry. I would recommend taking pictures of EVERYTHING, in the remodel/construction area particularly, so that when they damage something you have proof and can get reimbursed for the damages.
The tile, plumbing and construction work, as far as we know and can tell, was done well. The tile looks good.
The statements/estimates he provided did not have extended costs for each line item. He provided us with narrative and a final amount due. There were also no terms provided or discussed; 'Net 30' or 'Due upon receipt'. When he determined that my husband was taking to long to review the statements Mr. McHugh suggested we were 'shady' and threatened us with a mechanics lien.
We paid this contractor $1,500 in advance of the final bill in order to recognize that he had costs to cover during our job. When I paid the final statement, I withheld an amount to cover replacing the parts on the washer and dryer. I supplied a bill from a local appliance repair for the parts, and the bid that a repair man provided for his services. The washer has a motherboard in the face and just pulling off parts and replacing them isn't something a homeowner would do. I thought Mr. McHugh would be willing to, at a minimum, repair our new appliances.
Mr. McHugh made it very clear that he would most certainly file a mechanics lien if we didn't pay him in full, he contacted an attorney from California to write to us and TELL us we better pay him or else. (Turns out this attorney was not licensed to practice law in Colorado.) We did pay him in FULL.
UPDATE: Two weeks after the job has been completed, I have an odd brown spot in the grout that appears to be coming from the back side of the tile. A few weeks later the grout of the shower floor is darkening as if the sealant used isn't lasting. I just pasted Oxyclean all over it hoping the darkening grout will lighten so I can reseal it.
Since the first day this review was posted, he has harassed me via text on my personal phone, threatening us with a libel case and potentially defamation of character. (See uploaded text messages.)
The work, tile setting, is pretty good. There were many details that were not discussed. The narrow shower could have been avoided however neither of us talked about it. I assumed since the original tub was 30" wide the shower would be too.
The shower floor and surrounding grout is getting mottled and doesn't look nice. I will be cleaning/bleaching it and resealing.
This is our experience with this contractor and the events are accurately recounted. Your experience may be different.
"I’m very sorry you had this experience, and we will certainly take your advice into account in adding detail to our bills and ensuring our clients understand the process completely. We absolutely encourage our clients to take pictures of everything, as we too have documented evidence that we were not the ones who damaged your property in this case. As you can understand I am a small business owner and I need to protect myself from slander, false claims and clients who do not want to pay for my services after-the-fact. Of course if you are unhappy with any of the work we’d be happy to fix it for you as we stand behind our work 100%. I also encourage all of our clients to get multiple referrals before hiring a contractor and we will be more than happy to provide referrals of past clients that can speak to our integrity of work as well as the high level of respect we show to each home we enter. To our existing clients this review must come as a shock. This review is the exact opposite of what my past clients have experienced as well as the exact opposite of what my future clients can expect to experience. We have been in business for over 15 years. We hold five different Contractors Licenses that span two states, have been featured as a bathroom remodeling expert on multiple HGTV television shows, have served as a consultant for remodel projects for individuals across the United States, and have been awarded three different Super Service awards from Angie’s List in three different categories. None of these things could have been possible, nor would we still be in business if we treated our clients the way this member describes. We understand very well that integrity is the backbone of any remodel project . Needless to say, this is a very ugly and intentionally misleading review that attacks the core values of our company. I would encourage you to read the reviews from other Angie’s List members for a more accurate portrayal of our services. Additionally, in an effort to provide full disclosure, I will be happy to provide anyone who is interested this reviewer’s full contact information so you can see the project & claim of damage for yourself. Please inquire."
"Thanks for the great review! Keep us posted on how we can help you in the future."
"Thanks! Enjoy your bathroom!"
"Thanks for the great review as well as touching upon a very important part of our process which is the pulling of permits. The fact that we are a fully licensed General Contractor in Fort Collins (as well as Denver, Larimer County, Wellington, Loveland & a few more areas) means that we have to ability to pull permits for your project. If a contractor tells you it is not important, it is most likely that they cannot pull the permits because they do not hold the appropriate license to do so. The cost of the permits is also much lower than most might think (averaging 5% of the total project cost) and the benefits for the homeowner is that all permitable phases of the project will be inspected by a city inspector. You will have piece of mind that your project is done to industry standards and up to code. This is one of the main reasons that hiring a licensed contractor is so important. Thanks again for inviting us into your home and creating such a fantastic transformation. Enjoy!"
The cost quote listed above included all materials except the tile, the toilet, and the new shower controls. Mr McHugh gave me the names of 3 tile companies that would give me his contractor's discount. All of them were companies I planned to visit, anyway.
On the arranged date to start, Mr. McHugh and his assistant arrived on time and immediately laid down ground cloths in the hallway and bedroom where they would be walking. I offered them half of my garage for work space, so they arranged all their materials and tools for easy access during the project.
The first two days were devoted to removal of the tub and toilet, and the removal of old tile shower area walls and floor covering. After all demolition was completed, the shower area subflooring and reinforcements were built. The new mold resistant walls and fibre glass covering were installed. Mold resistant sub flooring for the bathroom floor was installed. The new shower mechanism was installed.
On the third and fourth days, all the tile was laid, and grouted.. The new drain for the shower was fitted. On the fifth day, the grout was sealed, and tile was polished. All cleanup was was competed. In fact, a thorough cleanup was done each day before they left.
The job was done in the time that Mr. McHugh had determined. Everything was cleaned and all waste and unused materials were taken away. All I had to do was return unused tile to the shop where I had bought it. The manager had previously told me that they bought back any unused tile.
I was very pleased with the finished result from two craftsmen who know what they are doing.
"Thanks for the great review! You remodel was a great experience for us as well. Great clients like you make our job easy. Thanks again and enjoy your bathroom!"
"Thank you for the kind words, Member as well as for the opportunity to work on your beautiful home. Enjoy!"
"Thank you for inviting me and my team into your home and letting us do what we do best. We look forward to working with you on future projects. Thanks!"
"Thank you. Enjoy your new floor!"
