We hired Carl Lopes after he was referred by his family member to do a complete remodel a rental home. He only billed us for labor and we bought materials from Home Depot. The demo seemed to go fine but then he would string us on by saying that he completed more than he had accomplished. We asked to do walk throughs but he would take the key, draw the blinds and make excuses why we couldn’t come in. He started the job in July and we finally did a walk through at the end of October and he only had about 25% of the job finished, and we foolishly made “progress” payments over that time. He told us he would have 50% completed by Thanksgiving but when time came, nothing was accomplished. We had to let him go and assess the damages, and boy did he make a mess. He had textured the dry wall and sprayed over windows, trim and the floor; he left wood material outside and was not usable because it got weathered; he used the wrong material in many areas; he started projects all over the house and didn’t finish, etc. We lost almost $5,000 in materials. We ended up hiring a new contractor who had to charge us more to fix all of Carl’s mistakes. In all, we probably lost $10,000 or more using Carl. To top it off, Carl told us in July that the job would be done by October but we are now looking at March for it to be finished. We were out rent all those months as well. I would NEVER recommend Carl to anyone. He had a list of rerefences but a contractor will likely only include clients or friends who somehow had a good experience.
