My experience with A to Z roofing was a complete disaster, and after seeing their recent ad in the Angie's List magazine, I felt compelled to post here, despite the fact that my experience was a few years back.  In early summer of 2009, the roof on my home was declared a loss by my insurance company due to storm damage to my then-obsolete shingles.  I was referred to A to Z by my my long-time insurance agent, who had used them successfully in the past.  Pleased with the initial service call (which was prompt,) and the quote (which was in the ballpark of other quotes,) I authorized A to Z to replace the roof on my home.  The minute the agreement was signed, though, the trouble began.  My rep (who was previously responsive and helpful) took forever to get shingle samples to me, telling me to "just look online" to find something that we liked.  After several weeks we finally got the samples and made our selection.  It then took the rep another couple weeks to return to pick the samples back up (we live in central Denver, minutes from I-25, so it wasn't as if our location was inconvenient.)  Our agreement was made in late July, and one day in mid-November, I received a call at 4:15 pm, while at work, to notify me that the following day (a Friday,) the crew would be to our home the next morning at 7:00 am.  I asked if we needed to do anything to prepare, and was told no.  I then asked if the crew would return on Saturday to complete the work, and was told that it was a one-day job, there was plenty of daylight to finish it.
On the day the roof was done (a cold day about 3 days after a snowstorm,) the crew arrived.  I attempted to ask the foreman if he really thought the work would be done that same day, but his English was so poor that he could not communicate with me.  Around 10:00 am, I received a frantic phone call from the crew, saying that the alarm on our house was going off.  We didn't have an alarm.  After I asked the caller to repeat the address, he did, then said "nevermind, lady" and hung up on me.  I called A to Z to find out what was going on, and was told that it was just a wrong number.  I then asked how it could have been a wrong number when the caller gave me my own address and was told that he didn't know, but that my house was fine.  My husband returned home to see what was going on, and arrived to find that the supposed "foreman" of the job was no where to be found.  No one seemed to be in charge of the work, and no one could answer about the frantic phone call I received earlier.  My husband asked one of the workers to ask the foreman to call him when he returned, but he never got a call.  That night, when I returned home from work (at 4:30 pm, at which time it was dark out,) the roof appeared to be only about 2/3 complete.  Work wasn't completed until after 7:00 pm, in the pitch dark and degrees below freezing.  I went out back to discover that our patio furniture had literally been thrown across the yard - and rather than appropriately cleaning up the debris from the job, the workmen had my garden house out (again, in freezing cold temperatures,) and were just hosing the debris under my deck for me to deal with on my own later.  The satellite dish (disabled,) was literally left dangling off the side of my home.  Then I went to the front yard... and discovered that they had removed all of the rain gutters from my home.  This despite the order explicitly stating that the gutters were to remain.  Landscaping rocks had been removed from my front yard and were used as chocks to hold the trailer in place on my very slanted driveway, and were gouging holes into the concrete.  As I frantically called my sales rep to find out what sort of incompetent crew had been sent to my house, the crew was standing around out front, using a keychain flashlight to look for their missing tools.  They wanted to leave their trailer in my driveway until 11:00 the next day - apparently the owner of it had left the job site.
But wait... it gets better.  The following day, the salesman returned to my home to assess the damage.  He said that it wasn't that big of a series of issues, and that they'd replace the gutters, so really we were "coming out ahead."  In the meanwhile, my husband and I had picked up over 40 nails from our driveway and the cul-de-sac where we live.  Our Radon Mitigation System had been broken.  Large portions of shingles, nails, and two cigarette butts were inside of our solar tubes.  Somehow, among all of this, we were supposed to be grateful for the "free gutters" we were getting.  The problems hadn't even been resolved when we started receiving demands for payment.  Our salesman initially told us that payment was not due until the inspection had taken place by the City.  A to Z said that the city had signed off on everything and then tried to claim that the salesman never said that payment was due following the inspection.  Seeing how this whole experience had been a comedy of errors, I decided to call the city.  They hadn't even been notified that the completion of the work (probably because it wasn't actually complete!)  Finally the new gutters were put on, and the radon system was repaired.  Months later, the city finally inspected the work.  The whole time, A to Z argued with me about everything: it was my fault that the crew threw our patio furniture (because we should have moved it with the 12 hour notice we got that they were coming), it was our fault that they left the satellite dish hanging off the house, how do we know that it was them who damaged our radon mitigation system or who got shingle pieces in our solar tubes, our rain gutters weren't that great anyhow, etc.
Long story short, we eventually settled on a discount for the damage to my home (four months after the work was done,) but A to Z was a nightmare to deal with.  I wouldn't recommend this firm under any circumstances.

My husband asked me not to write anything derogatory about A to Z roofing since after over a month they did finally manage to repair the countless things they damaged so here is my "NICE" version.
1) Take photos of your house before they get there.  This means, gutters, siding, tube lights, soffits, oh yeah siding, flashing, any and everything on or around your roof.
2) Most likely your sales person is NOT the owner of the company.  Find out who is, you may need to deal with the owner and don't let him treat you like some woman that doesn't know what damage is.  As an adjuster over 7 years I do know roofs a bit.
That's it, my EXTREMELY nice version.  You decide
Response from A TO Z ROOFING
"All truths are not being told. Yes, there were some small issues with this particular installation, but A to Z Roofing went above and beyond to address any and all concerns with the customer. As a company policy, photos are taken prior to job start for situations such as this. Siding: From our (pre-install) photo documentation, the siding was damaged and covered in tar. The product was old galvanized metal. A to Z Roofing installed NEW pre-painted steel trim at NO COST to the customer. Timeline: A to Z Roofing accommodated the schedule set forth by the homeowner. We were asked to stop work, we complied and returned at the customers request. This client failed to mention that her furnace vent was not installed to current code. A to Z Roofing hired an HVAC technician to bring up to code at NO COST to the customer. She is also not accurate on her payment. The amount due was $7569.84. She was also given a $100 gift card for the inconvenience."

The job went very well. See above.  If your house is situated such that the roofer will have to park on your driveway,  do make sure they have vehicles that don't leak oil. If you have run flat tires do make sure you have road hazard warranties because even though they cleaned up I did get a flat tire.   Run flat tires that cannot be repaired.

Live in ski town 90 miles from Denver. Cautioned about using out of town contractors. Because of competitive pricing we tried a Denver firm and were 100% satisfied. Mill Run Condominium Breckenridge Co.

What I liked was that they returned our call, which the other roofing companies did not. The people that actually did the work were great. The representative, that dealt with us and was in charge of everything, was really bad. They dragged this whole thing for 6 weeks when it could have been done in 2 days. I don’t think we would ever use them, but we might not be able to get anybody else to call us back either.

Our roof was damaged in the hailstorm of 6/13/2010. I called our State Farm insurance rep and found that A-Z roofing was on their preferred list. I called them to inspect the roof first instead of having the insurance company come out first. (I was told by State Farm that if the insurance company comes out and looks, even if I didn't pursue a claim, they could increase my rates! So I wanted an expert opinion first on whether I would in fact have a claim.) I chose A-Z from among several companies. They installed an asphalt replacement roof, just like the one that was damaged. They also dealt with the gutter replacement and patching of plaster inside that was damaged due to a leak in the roof. The work was done when they said it would be, and they cleaned up well. Two downspouts were put in the wrong place but they came back and corrected it at no charge. The plaster repair and interior painting were also very good.

This company is a State Farm Premier Service Program participant. A to Z was one of two SF-PSP roofers who would install a stone-coated steel roof. We selected A to Z over the other SF-PSP roofer because we understood that they had a crew that as dedicated to specifically laying steel roofs. We appreciated the project as it was described by the A to Z representatives. Also, the rep from A to Z indicated that they would manage the full project, from a-to-z. We planned to install a tubular skylight in a dark room at this time, since the roof was going to be off; the rep said they would coordinate with the company as long as we provided the contact information. Their bid was so close to the other company (likely because they both used the same product) that the cost difference was negligible and did not play a part in the decision. The project took about the time promised (1 week). We learned, however, once the project week had started, that the company used mostly sub-contractors to complete the project. As best as I could determine, only the roof removal crew and the project manager were actual employees of the company. The fact that these subs (the gutter crew, the roofers, the satellite re-installer) were independent from the company caused coordination problems, and I feel more intervention on my part than I should have been required to do. The tear-off crew arrived on time on Monday, and got right after it. However, they were not as careful about our property as I was lead to believe they would be. They: damaged numerous foundation-planted shrubs with the gutter removal; removed a downspout that they were supposed to leave; did the most cursory of clean-up following the removal, and left nails in our driveway; they did not run a magnet sweep around their work area; left large pieces of roofing material squashing my perennial bed. I spent an hour sweeping the drive and garage, clearing nails and other debris after they had left. Although I provided the contact information for the tubular skylight company to A to Z, the coordination/communication fell through. I was led to believe by A to Z that the installer would be at our house around 2 p.m. on Monday. When no one showed by 3 p.m., I called the tubular skylight company and the rep told me she had not gotten confirmation from A to Z of the appointment. So, with my intervention, the install was schedule for the next day. The gutter installers showed up Tuesday morning, and were ready to get right to it. I pointed out that a portion of fascia was supposed to be replaced (as per the proposal), but they had no awareness of it, and so were without the necessary boards to do the work. Also, I had pointed out on Monday that we were missing a downspout that the removers tossed, but that was not communicated to the gutter guys, so they were unprepared to install it on Monday. (And, they only returned on Friday with it after a follow-up call to A to Z). The roofers showed up early on Tuesday, but there was no material for them to work with. The material showed up 4 and 1/2 hours later, and was missing hardware (no nails). So, the roofer could only get a half day's work done, and only with nails he happened to already have from another job. Clean-up after the first half-day of work went pretty well. However, because they got a late start on Tuesday, they were not ready for the satellite re-installer to do his job. And, this satellite sub-contractor would not be available until Friday to realign the satellite. (Three nights w/o satellite service as a result.) Also, it was through a conversation with the satellite tech that I came to discover that a particular type of roof mount that I was lead to believe we could use (so as not to be drilling holes into a new steel roof) did not actually exist, and that the roof material would have to be penetrated to reinstall the satellite. The roofers returned on Wednesday and finished the project. Clean-up went well. There was peace on Thursday. On Friday, I had to call A to Z to remind them that I still needed a downspout (the gutter guy finally came at around 4:40 p.m. on Friday) and that the satellite had to be realigned (the satellite tech returned around 4:45 p.m. on Friday). A week later there was some heavy rain in our neighborhood Thursday night into Friday, and it revealed that there was a problem at the junction of our one "valley" and the gutter. I called A to Z Friday afternoon (we had been away overnight) to alert them to the problem, and expected someone to contact me Monday to correct the problem. I had to call again on Tuesday, as I did not hear from the project manager on Monday, and he did come out to correct the problem. I will only know following the next rain/snow event whether the fix works. Generally, we are happy that we decided on installing the steel roof project. But, I am very disappointed that the project required so much hands-on participation on my part. Based on the presentation by the sales rep, I expected only to have to be available for providing access to power and receiving material for this project. It's a good thing I am home most days. I can't imagine what the results would have been had I not been so available.

The salesman was professional, did a good job of explaining and educating me to the advantages of certain upgrades, he provided me with an estimates that showed the various options for materials. The roofers arrived on time and performed the job within one day and did a good job cleaning up. I am a satisfied customer. The price was fair.
