I checked Angie's list and found one good reference. I found other good references on the net I called the references that the owner Nick provided I had three quotes and solid image flooring was in the middle of the range Nick the owner was personable and put together a comprehensive quote for the carpet removal, floor installation, and finish work. Overall the work appeared to be good and Nick and his partner finished on schedule. The work was completed in January 2010. After about four months the bullet nose on the landing at the top of the stairs became loose and you can see a seperation between that piece and the next piece of flooring of the hallway. I have called and exchanged voice mail messages with Nick in June and July and a woman at his home stated that he had a death in the family and he would call me back. I gave him some space and did not call for a couple weeks. Today is July 29, 2010. I have tried to call the Solid Image Floor number on the website and the voice mail box has been full for the last couple days. Since I had contacted and briefly spoke with Nick the owner (the individual that installed the flooring in my house), I am confident he is aware of the situations and is no longer in the business. Nick is a good sales person. He is courteous and attentive. The reality is that the floor was installed incorrectly and he is not willing to come and fix it. Even as his business has failed, he could still find the resources to fix the floor and stand behind the work he has completed. It is his name and his charactor that is tarnished. I will need to pay another company to come in and fix the issues with the floor. Please be aware that this is a company that does not have the resources to stand behind their work
Response from Solid Image Hardwood Flooring
"Work completed, accepted, and paid for at the end of the project: -Remove 13 existing treads from existing stair case and replace with new pre finished 40 inch red oak treads and pre finished white MDF risers. -Remove 100 square feet of carpeting and dispose of properly from up stairs hallway. -Remove and return existing baseboard / Caulk and prep for paint -Install new 2 ¼ #1 red oak flooring in a directional layout to trace four walls at up stairs hall way. Install five transitions at bathroom entry, three bedroom entries, and the top of the staircase. -Dust contained sanding of 319 square feet of existing 2 ¼ red oak flooring and 100 square feet of new 2 ¼ red oak flooring / Finish with three coats of commercial traffic water based finish (our best method of refinishing wood in an occupied home). To my knowledge, the quality of work that was performed at the residence was satisfactory and was accepted by the member himself. In the month of August, I had returned to his home to address a few minor issue’s: Lose or broken stair transition, One squeaky stair, and Fading due to sun light on the floor where there is a rug. I informing member, resolved two out of the three issues that I was called back for listed and explained below: -First- The bottom stair had a squeak issue prior to me removing the existing tread. I screwed in 2 x 4’s to each stair in hopes that the pre manufactured staircase, that was installed years prior to my company adjusting this feature in his home, would take some of that squeak away. As I thought it would work, the lasting result of this attempted fix only lasted for about six to eight months. I explained, and he agreed, that before I started I told him that this could be an issue. I told Patrick what it would take to fix the problem and he decided and stated “I think we will just be chasing ghosts in order to fix it.” This problem was resolved and we moved on to the next. -Second- He had put a floor runner rug at the entry to the kitchen where we had refinished the wood flooring. Months later he had pulled it up only to find minor fading underneath this area due to either sunlight or natural ageing of the finish. This was addressed at the time of the quote and he understood that this issue most of the time cannot be prevented. -Third- At the top of the staircase, any time a floor runs up to it, we install a transition known as a bull nose piece. This piece had separated from the floor and appeared to be loss but after further investigating and removal of this piece, it appeared that there had been some fluctuation in either the staircase or the floor at the top of the staircase. I told him that even though I did not feel I was responsible for the expansion and contraction in this piece, I would remove it and replace it at no charge. To ensure that this would not happen again, within reason, I installed a bull nose with a wider base to cover more of the sub floor area (Basically, I originally installed a 3-¼-bull nose. When I replaced it, I used a 5-¼-bull nose). I did spend about 3 hours of my own time addressing everything that he had a concern with, and when I was done installing the new piece at the stairs, I showed him what I did, he accepted it and I planned on coming back later that afternoon to sand and finish the bull nose to match the rest of the floor. I received a call about 11:00 am on Saturday the 21st of August, the same day as the repair, and he had now changed his mind and thought that the piece I replaced would end up being faulty due to one surface scratch in the wood, which is common in bigger planks of wood. It was not a faulty piece and I did not feel that I would have to replace it again and I left it at that. Not to mention that I was inconveniencing another schedule this day to take care of an issue that I did not create. Nick J Gengozian-Lead Mechanic/Owner"

I met Nick when he was doing the hardwood on my neighbor's house - he came over, took measurements and provided an estimate. He carefully examined my existing wood (something others that bid me out never did) and he seemed more detailed than others in the trade. I explained to him how picky I was about matching woods and he listened and took notes of everything I said. I signed the contract and was ready to have him start on a date specified only to have to reschedule because my basement project was delayed...he and his dad were so understanding and still got me in their schedule before the holidays which I so appreciated. Nick finished the project without any delays, and am so pleased with the workmanship, quality and overall professionalism that he and his dad gave me. The stairs and landing look AWESOME!!!! The wood matches in every detail of every item (baseboards, balusters, etc.) were done with care. I am going to hire him again for another project. Highly recommended!!!!
