Our home is a raised ranch that overlooks one of Denver's park lakes to the south. Our yard was raised behind a four-foot retaining wall near the street. The patio was too small, and tucked in under a roof, and in any case was a hodgepodge of various ages and types of concrete poured at different times and at varying slopes. A stairway down to our driveway was poured concrete, as were the walls that declined alongside the steps.
We wanted to raise the wall high enough to block any view of the street but keep the view of the park. We wanted to expand the patio in a way that would tie together different pieces of sidewalk, yard, patio, and decking into a unified terrace area. Finally, we wanted to cover the concrete stairs and walls leading down to the street level with sandstone. We hired Lucero's Masonry to do the job.
Lucero proved to be very flexible, because this was a project without a plan. All our design decisions were made on the fly. Our first guess at the wall height was too low, so we added another row of block. The size and shape of the terrace was set with a length of hose. We decided late in the game to cap the low framed wall at the front of our deck in the same stone as the walls to create the sense of a bridge between two separate sections of wall. Lucero's was able to keep up with our changes and adapted to our whims with ease.
We were amazed at how hard the crew worked and at how much of this heavy, dirty work they could accomplish in a day. They started at 8 am and worked until noon. They restarted at 1 pm and quit at 5. They took no other discernible breaks. They were careful of our property, and easy to work with.
David Lucero led the entire project and made sure that everything happened on time, and was well done. The quality of the entire project was a direct result of David?s attention to detail and the strength of his relationships with his workmen.
