I will never use this company again. It was a terrible experience from the first day on the job, until present -- where they have not returned my phone calls to schedule the warrenty work. Yes, after two years there is some peeling paint. I had the house painted by Ken Caryl during the summer of 2012, and it required daily babysitting on my part to ensure that they properly patched, primed, and painted the trim. They skipped over items mentioned in the contract and painted over wet work. In a word.....SLOPPY. The owner is very nice and convincing during the estimate, the painters gave the impression that they were being rushed by management and thus forced into low quality work. The paint brushes they used for the hand work, were thick and gooey with dried up paint, clearly not how one achieves a nice brush stroke. On their behalf, I do expect very high quality work when hiring a professional at a fair price, my expectations are probably much higher than average.
My contract clearly stated they would use REDWOOD, which is a higher grade wood known for its longevity and appearance. They completed the deck using 100% cheap treated lumber and tried to slip that past me because I was out of town during most of the construction. It saved them approximately $1000.00!! The job was promised to be complete in 5 days and it took them 28 days. The owner, Rick Kubacki told me numerous times they would be at my house and there were days with no work being done. The crew would often sit for hours wondering what to do because there was little to no communication between the owner and the crew. I was repeatedly lied to by Rick and his crew leader concerning the actual scope of work to be done. He would argue with me over details of the job instead of act professionally. They built the deck up against a leaning fence that didn't belong to me and argued with me when I demanded that it be repaired. They advertise that they never add something extra to the final bill but they attempted to charge me an extra $670 due to their negligence in the original estimate. They attempted to use lag bolts to connect the deck to the house when I specifically told them not too, due to the age of our foundation. I was constantly being "bulldogged" by the workers to do things differently than the way it was discussed. We had a bench built along the house to hide the foundation cracks. The foundation was supposed to be 100% concealed and they insisted that they use cheap lattice and therefore not built the way we discussed.
Whenever I confronted Rick about the debacle in my back yard, he would lie to me. He told me I was taking advantage of HIM!! The fact is that his workers are untrained and inexperienced and had no idea how to build my deck and cost him a ton of money standing around with nothing to do and he refused to correct the matters above because he would have been further in the hole financially. When he came to me for payment, I told him we needed to make amends somehow with the wrong and cheap lumber that was used. I was not happy but I agreed to a $400 discount and he told me when Spring came, he would personally come over and sand the entire deck and then stain it at his cost. Spring came and can you believe he had the audacity to stain my deck without sanding it? I confronted him once again about lying to me and he got irate with me and insists he sanded it. The stain job is sub-par and has drips everywhere. It looks like a 5 year old stained my deck.
If you want a contractor to lie to you every step of the way, then Ken Caryl is for you.
