Diagnosis was to replace the Oxygen sensor and catalytic converter for $4,000 due to code reports. Additionally there was a recommended repair to replace the upper control arms ($1100). At this point I needed to investigate my options for repair or replacement of the car. To help with this process they provided a list of service/maintenance recommendations. The total was over $7,000. ( Close to or more than the value of the car. I had spent over $6,000 in the past 10 months.) I've done a lot research to understand all of their recommendations and the work that has been performed on the car in the last 6 years. (purchased used in 2007). I clarified what was maintenance vs. repair. I also correlated this to Audi recommendations. With this information I researched the list with videos explaining the processes and web sites identifying the average repair costs for 2001 A6 parts and labor. Generally I found Avalon's labor prices were consistent with the local market but generally on the high end or above the range for parts.) I visited an emissions specialty shop. Based upon Avalon's report of the codes and their subsequent testing the shop recommended replacing the oxygen sensor. If the check engine light came on after this, then they'd look to see if the codes pointed at the catalytic converter. (i.e. Isolate the oxygen sensor to confirm it isn't impacting the intermittent converter codes. Avalon did not suggest a two stage approach.) The shop quoted just under $1600 for the converter parts. This was consistent with the web sites and Audi OEM parts pricing that I found on line. Avalon quoted just under $3000 for the parts. Avalon provides specialized technicians and a high level of customer services. I have benefited from their expertise. I have made the decision to keep my car for now but I realize that with the age of my car I need to be more vigilant in assessing the value of repairs and optional/required maintenance. While I had two other shops perform the recommended work, Avalon remains in the mix of my service providers.

I felt comfortable going forward with Avalon due to a 3 year warranty on parts and labor. So far the heater is working fine. Ultimately, while my car is over 10 years old, I like it very much. I drive less than 6000 miles a year. My goal is to keep the car for several more years. I understand that Audi maintenance and service will be higher than the average. In this instance I believe Avalon was competitive and provided good value. They have also been very proactive in contacting me to ensure that I am satisfied with their work.
