The project took several weeks longer than expected primarily due to project planning. For example, an old pier had to be removed that was not anticipated but could have been with a more thorough inspection prior to the project start. The patio underneath the deck was also replaced by a separate contractor after substantial completion of the deck and rework of the deck post piers was required prior to the patio pour due to change of plans by NCD and lack of communication with the patio contractor. To NCD's credit, they made deliberate efforts to ensure the deck piers looked good with the new patio - and they do. The pier for the spiral staircase also had to be modified after it was poured resulting in some of embedded mounting bolts coming loose when the spiral was attached. The spiral staircase was customer made by JP Welding & Ironwork, working as a subcontractor and JP was very good to work with excellent commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. They came up with a good solution for a non-slip coating for the tread surface that will also extend the life of the powder coat finish. The only issue with the staircase was that the powder coat finish did not match the deck rails as promised by NCD and this expectation should have been set properly in the beginning. Two follow up visits were required to complete minor details after the project was finished but NCD responded to a single request in both cases. In general they were enjoyable to work with and I feel they are committed to a quality outcome.
Project started July 7, deck complete July 29, stairs installed September 8.
I would use them again.
His crew ({"Vic" and assistant) were amazing craftsmen. To accommodate a tree trunk, they shaped the top railing of the deck without damaging either the tree or the overall aesthetic of the design--it seems to flow!
The major part of the project was completed in less than a week. Powder-coating the window-well grates took another week.
The crew was meticulous in maintaining a clean work site; every day, they cleared away tools and debris (they parked a dumpster in front of the house). Despite the daily rain showers, they managed to put in 7-8 hour days, making quick work of my project. They were pleasant, cheerful, and courteous.
The only possible criticism I could muster is that on Labor Day, two crew guys showed up to finish the below-deck screening. It was a surprise, given the holiday, but since we were anxious to have the job finished, I let them go ahead. When I mentioned it to Matt, he apologized profusely and said he would remind his crew about calling first.
Because the existing concrete stoop leading from the kitchen door was badly deteriorated, I decided to eliminate that access from the deck; unfortunately, the concrete (dating from 1957) could not be entirely removed (see my review for Flat & Fancy Concrete). Matt and I devised a method of screening off the underside of the deck area; not only did this hide and unattractive mound of concrete, it provided a useful new storage area for garden tools, supplies, etc.
The deck is composite material, and the guys who assembled the deck and put on the finishing touches did a splendid job. The guy who did the final painting of framework made a special trip to Home Depot to get a customized color match!
After the recoated grills were put in place, there was a slight discrepancy in level--the grates were not flush against the floor of the deck. One call to Matt and the problem was resolved by day's end.
BOTTOM LINE: if you need a deck, call Matt at New Creations! I'm only sorry I don't have need of another deck. Perhaps a gazebo?
Ryan and his team were a pleasure to work with throughout the project. Not only was the work professionally done the New Creations Team was engaging and friendly. I completed the demolition and removal of the old decking and framing and Ryan and team took over after that. The work was completed during the December/January time frame without an impact on quality.
Throughout the project Ryan was responsive to any modifications that inevitably come up in a project such as this. We have been very pleased with the deck since it was completed. One minor issue with a lose decking board and trim piece was quickly corrected when we called Ryan.
We would certainly use Ryan and New Creation Decks again in the future.
I would have no problem using them for another project
