The following is a list of the problems we had: 1) He was instructed to match the new addition to what was done when the cabin was built in 1952. I did not want the addition to look new. I have had to redo almost all of his work because of wrong choices, sloppy workmanship, and just plain incompetence. 2) He installed the wrong paneling. The entire cabin has knotty pine paneling and he installed D-select which is clear. He would not change it to knotty pine although we offered to pay for half of the new material. He told us three different and untrue reasons for not using matching knotty pine. He walked off the unfinished job saying he was not responsible for the aesthetics of our cabin. 3) The roof on the new addition leaked because he did not follow code when roofing the valleys. He used a narrow strip of flashing instead of a 20 inch wide metal strip (pictures available). The shingle pattern was laid incorrectly and he used a non-matching color of shingles for the ridge caps. Streaming water ruined 5 ceiling tiles in the kitchen. A bucket was used to catch water and my husband put a large sheet of visqueen over the roof to keep the rain out. John offered to look at the roof, but never did. When I told him the visqueen was taking a beating, he couldn't come for two weeks. So much was wrong with the roof, we hired a different company, Wilcox Roofing, to completely re-roof the new addition. 4) John asked me to write a check for $4,647.23 to Foxworth-Galbraith Lumber Co. in Woodland Park for materials. I did, even though he did not have the individual invoices with him. He needed to get F-G paid, so I trusted him to bring all the invoices later. He didn't, and when my lawyer asked him to give me the invoices, he would not. Also, he would not authorize F-G to do so either. 5) John charged for a new water line ($1,250). However, our plumber stated that he had installed a new water line. Our plumber's bill was for all the plumbing completed. 6) When the kitchen linoleum was removed, John found oak hardwood floors from 1952. However, he charged me labor and materials as if he had installed it. 7) John charged me for milled cove molding. However, he used standard lumber store cove. He did the same for the Douglas Fir Casing and used lumber yard pine instead. 8) He dripped stain on my new dishwasher, newly sanded floors, new cabinet drawer, and brush-stroked stain on the new white ceiling. 9) He put a set of windows in the laundry, and they need to be reset as they were not level (1/2 inch higher on one side). 10) It is customary for a company to clean-up sawdust after sanding wood floors. John did not. He moved my heavy western furniture back into my house on top of all the sawdust. It took days of paid help to get the mess cleaned up. 11) In addition to the above, John damaged our cabin, our furniture, our peace of mind, and our bank account. 12) I found out that John's previous job had experienced the same type of problems. Unfortunately, I talked to the homeowner after the fact.
Description of Work: John W. Dayhoff was hired as a contractor to add an addition to our cabin in Green Mountain Falls, CO. He added 8 feet x 11 feet to build a utility room and added 5 feet x 11 feet to enlarge the kitchen/dining area.

Response from I.B. Board & Co Inc
Angie's List is BAD for Good Contractors!!! (no way to remedy non-angie's list customers) Unfortunately not all people are honest and this review is unfair and dishonest. I.B. Board did make a mistake on the roofing and made attempts to remedy the problem. I.B. Board & Company built an addition to this cabin that looks that was well designed and well executed. Customers expectations of new woods matching 50+ year old wood is unrealistic and not part of our agreement. Customer was very happy with all the work until she decided that she wanted something different. I.B. Board was accommodating with changes, but requests became ridiculous and eventually had to stop. Once Mrs. [Member Name Removed] wasn't getting her way, she decided that the "OLD APPEARANCE" (that we worked hard to achieve) was substandard work. She wanted old looking oak floors at first, then complains months later that they were unsatisfactory and needed to be done like new floors. Charging Mrs. [Member Name Removed] to redo the floors after her experiment was unacceptable to her...Arbitrators saw it differently. Same with panelling and other finishes. It's sad because the the addition was very hard for most people to tell what was old and new...Mission was Accomplished.

He is an incredibly skilled carpenter and painter and tile man- he has no limits and is very knowledgable in so many parts of construction. The work he did and the quality and care he puts into his work is a rare and great trait. He is one of the very best for sure and I plan to hire him again for more work very soon. Overall the work was done with wonderful craftmanship and care. Everything he worked on in our house quickly became our favorite part of our home!
Description of Work: John remodeled a major part of my home and did an amazing job. I was in the middle of the remodel and I had a deployment looming. John went out of his way to make sure the job was done before I left, to include coming in early and staying very late. The remodel included modifying load bearing walls, installation of arched throughways to include arched trimwork, drystack stone work on a new fireplace, drywall refinishing and finishing, tile repair and replacement, and a complete bathroom remodel.
