Showed up on time and got to work quickly. He is easy to reach by phone. There are definitely cheaper deals out there for a 'inspect and clean' service but I liked the high Angies List rating. He found some issues the first day and the cost went form $200 (to clean 3 furnaces) to $600 (to fix a couple broken heat rods and some gas leak). I believed him 100% on these issue and said to go for it. He fixed them that day, all was good.
He left that day saying everything was great and the final cost was around $600. Sounded fine to me.
That night my tenant calls and says he heard a large popping noise and a smell when he turned on the furnace. I called the technician back that morning and told him there was an issue. He came back right away which was great.
He determined that the issue was the blower motor had broken. I asked why when he 'inspected and cleaned' it he didn't notice this. He tells me there is no way for him to know when that particular piece will go out. Obviously it was upsetting that within 12 hours of him inspecting a system it breaks. This is the reason for the low 'quality' score. It ended up costing $500 more to fix the blower motor.
The technician got very defensive when I asked why he didn't catch the broken motor. I wanted to know why I would pay $200 for an inspection that didn't catch this issue (I was also worried that the inspection caused this issue, how can I ever know?). I think that is a reasonable concern. He wouldn't let me speak and often spoke over me on the phone. This is the reason for the low 'professionalism' score.
I was also upset that he charged me a $75 'service call fee' when he came back the next day (that was part of the additional $500). Seems a little weak to charge a fee to come out when you're inspecting a system that you might have broken and that leads to more business. This is the reason for the low 'price' score. Seems like this is probably where you could have cut an upset customer a break.
"I apologize that you weren’t happy with the service or the price you were provided. You state in the Angie’s list rating this Triplex was built in 1984 this is not true the Triplex was built 1942. I was hired to clean and service 3 furnaces in your triplex apartments. All 3 furnaces were filthy and hadn’t been cleaned in years. The filters that I pulled out were black. If these furnaces had been serviced and cleaned the gas leaks as well as the insulated heat runs would have been caught long before you called me. According to Pikes Peak Regional Building website the furnaces that were replaced in 2 of your units were not permitted or inspected. Had this been done it would have prevented the gas shut off valves being replaced by me as they were not up to code. They were original to the house and should have been replaced when the 2 furnaces were replaced. I would like to address some of your concerns • I did charge you $74.99 per furnace to Clean and Inspect them (Done Oct 21, 15) • When I went into the crawl space I immediately noticed one of the 5 inch insulated heat runs was no longer connected and was full of water. This heat run would need to be replaced as it could not be repaired. I also let you know there was also another 5 inch insulated heat run and a 12 inch insulated heat run that weren’t connected and needed to be reattached I called you right away to let you know about this and to also let you know that there is a plumbing leak right by where the 5 inch insulated heat run that is full of water should be hooked up. You stated you were aware of the leak. (Replaced/repaired 2 of the heat runs Oct 22, 15) • I found gas leaks on 2 of the furnaces at the shut off valves. These pipes were original to the Triplex being built in 1942. (Repaired gas leaks and replaced 5inch insulated heat run Oct 22, 15) • You did call me on Oct 23, 15. This was 2 days after I inspected the furnace to let me know the tenant heard a loud pop and smelled burning rubber. I was there at 8am to find out what was going on. You are correct I did inspect the furnace on Oct 21, 15 and ran it for 45 minutes while I was there. Everything worked fine. I tested everything and saw no issues with the furnace. After going into the crawl space and diagnosing the problem with the furnace I did determine it was the blower motor. • I called to let you know the blower motor needed to be replaced at which time you stated “ I broke it” I did take offense to this because my business is built on my integrity and not on breaking things to try and lead to more business. If I had broken something I would have repaired/replaced it at no cost to you. You asked me how this could happen after I had just been to your units. I let you know the blower motor was old, it is also an electrical part that could go out anytime. You again stated that I must have broken it. I let you know that you were free to call any contractor you would like out to do the repairs. You stated the tenant needed heat and you wanted me to repair it that day. I had the tenant’s heat up and running that day. • I do charge a $75 service call when I am called because a furnace is not working. The furnace not working had nothing to do with my previous visits. Any customer that calls me for no heat call is charge a $75 service call. This is standard business practice. • For clean and service on 3 furnaces, Repair/Replacement of 3 insulated heat runs, replacement of 2 shut off valves and gas piping, replacement of transformer and blower motor you had a total bill of $1027.97. Over a 3 day period I spent about 6 hours working at your property. I know that my bill for all the work I did on your property was done at more than a fair price."
