Last summer I decided to remodel three bedrooms and the connecting hallway in our 1947 vintage home. When I pulled up the carpet I found both good news and bad. The good: there was original oak flooring under most of the carpet. The bad: In two bedrooms the flooring was covered by a tar-based adhesive and white-painted cork tiles; in the hallway the floor was a mishmash of red oak, white oak, plywood, and brick from an old exterior wall that had been removed. In other words, the floor was in terrible condition although much of it was solid enough to be refinished. 
Justin Spletzer and Go Floors were truly up to the job. They combined excellent workmanship and good attitudes with a good price and great advice. After we had taken out the cork and scraped up as much tar as possible, Go Floors did the rest:

• They sanded through the tar and revealed the beauty of the original wood. 
  
  • They recommended something I had not seen or heard of -- flush-mount, in-floor oak furnace vents. Those turned out to be a key feature in defining the elegance of the rooms. There are no metal vents sticking up to trip over, and all the lines are clean. I love them.
  • I dislike the look of water-based sealers, so they recommended a quick drying oil sealer to get the look of oil, followed by the water-based sealer. The combination worked very nicely, indeed, and eliminated 90% of the VOCs in the process. 
  • For the hallway we decided to overlay the existing chaos with a new layer of wood that would be merged into the existing hardwood of the dining & living area (which is already raised to that level). Go Floors blended the old and new together seamlessly.
  • I have more to do in the future and will certainly ask Go Floors to return when it is time.  I am still doing construction in the rooms Go Floors finished for me, so I cannot get good pictures to show just now. I plan to add them at a time in the future when I can get a good shot of Go Floors craftsmanship.
