Steve Van Lier and his crew were outstanding.  They were caught in the middle of the Boulder flood while doing our roof.  They made sure it would withstand the rain!  They were nice, professional and informative.  I highly recommend them.

They are a pleasure to work with and I have been very happy with them, which is why I have continued to use them. I have been working with the same people, Steve and Nick over the years and they are delightful. I wouldn't have a complaint on anything they have done and would highly recommend them.

Initially they told me that business was slow and they could get to my roof immediately, but it was actually about a week before they were available to begin.  They told me they weren't sure if it would be a full day or a half day worth of work so they quoted me for the full day just in case.  The day the repairman came out (4/11) he worked for a couple of hours then told me there was more work to do then they initially realized.  He removed the rotten wood, replaced it, and put down a weather-proof seal before leaving.  He told me he would be back the next day to put the shingles on and finish the job.  After almost 2 days had passed, I hadn't heard from the company, and it was forecasted to rain, I gave them a call.  They told me that the shingles had not yet come in, but should be there the next day (4/14).   I didn't hear anything further from the company until 4/18 when the repairman showed up and finished the job.  I wasn't overly worried about the time in between the repair start and finish, but it would be nice if they would've given me a heads up that it would take a week to finish.  I'm not entirely sure if the repairman worked a "full day", but I did get charged the full amount they quoted me.  I guess a full day by roofer standards is around 5 hours.  I gave the company a B overall because they are a bit hard to get a hold of (although they do usually call back within 24hrs), they kind of left me hanging, but the price was right and they are very friendly people.  Some of the guys I called to give me quotes were a little over the top with the friendliness and pushiness, these quys were not.

Before even selecting a roofer, Van Lier was very accessable and willing to spend time with us talking about various roofing materials. He was honest with his opinions and did not push for more expensive options even when we indicated interest. He was willing to install a 4'x4' sample on our roof -- a requirement for our HOA's approval -- without insisting on any additional fee for time or material. Once the project was underway, the roofers were punctual and polite. We would definitely use Van Lier again.

Van Lier worked with my through the whole process. They advised me to make an insurance claim and worked with my insurance company. They were very good about being patient as we went throught the painful process of choosing the shingle color and desing. The dropped off countless shingle samples. In the end, we are very happy with both the looks of the job and the quality. They also discounted the cost of having our TV satelite dish reset. They arranged for us to get all new gutters, and we are pleased with them also.

Van Lier replaced our old cedar shake roof with a modern asphalt shingle material. They were supposed to coordinate with two companies who were hired to install solar photovoltaics and solar thermal. Van Lier called on the day that they were to start to inform us that they would not be able to start on the scheduled date. This forced the two solar installation companies to reschedule at the last minute, as well. This caused the entire project (roofing plus solar) to be significantly delayed. These kinds of delays, especially when the work is supposed to be coordinated with other companies, are not professional. During the reroofing project, a screw was driven far enough into the house by the roofers to cause a section of sheetrock to break off, leaving a partial hole in our wall. To their credit, Van Lier arranged for a contractor to repair the damage soon after we discovered it. Van Lier did a poor job cleaning up around our house after the job was done. We have been picking up bits of nails, cedar shake splinters, asphalt shingles, and roofing packaging for weeks from around our yard. So far, neither of our dogs has been injured, but we were very concerned for their safety when we saw how much debris was left around the house. It appeared that in their effort to make up time for the delay in starting our project, Van Lier let some things slide, such as grounds cleanup. This, plus the delay when they knew that other contractors were depending on them for scheduling, bespeak of a certain lack of professionalism. Van Lier did not make any effort at getting feedback from us about how well the project went from our perspective. Lack of interest in customer satisfaction also indicates a lack of professionalism. The roof looks good. It is water tight, as evidenced from the lack of any water damage after one of the heaviest rainfalls we have ever experienced soon after the roof was completed. The flashing work appears robust. From all appearances, it looks like the roofing itself was properly installed.

Not much of a story. They showed up, did the job. No stories to tell. A very good experience. It's not like getting a new roof is something that everybody wants to have to do. But if you need a new roof, you want it to be hassle free. This was.

They have done a fine job on both roofs. Both have lasted, and I've been satisfied with their work.
