I was very happy with the other company when they moved my son INTO his apartment 2 years earlier, so I thought I'd use them again. But THEY were the ones who suggested that I call The Moving Connection, a company within Boulder, so that I wouldn't have to pay the extra transportation fee! They said that The Moving Connection is a very good, conscientious, professional, family-run business, just like they were, and that they could highly recommend them. Since I really liked this other moving company, I just took their word for it and never even looked on Angie's List for reviews.
I'm a very satisfied customer, but after completing our move, and coming on here to write my review, I discovered one, and only one, review for The Moving Connection -- and it was an Overall F! I am a little skeptical -- did this 2013 customer write a review for the wrong company? Was his/her job a fluke? Has The Moving Connection risen from the ashes since 2013? Imagine my surprise to discover that they were ever poorly reviewed!
Anyway, my sons and I are very happy with the services provided by The Moving Connection!
I spoke with Paul and Dave as I was setting up our move. Dave was very helpful and polite on my initial call. I called in March 2015 to ask a bunch of questions and reserve the morning spot on May 21, 2015. Dave told me that we would not be receiving an email or any other form of confirmation after scheduling, but that they would be there on time and on the right day (and they were). Good! (I LIKE confirmations, though. Makes me feel better!)
When I called the week prior to May 21, to confirm that my son had everything he needed for his move (materials that were suggested by Dave 2 months earlier), Paul seemed to think I had two heads! He wasn't very helpful at first and, truth be told, he struck me as condescending and a bit rude. But I remained calm and explained that I just wanted to verify that I had delivered everything my 24-year-old son needed for the big move (a padlock, shrink wrap, furniture blankets, clothesline, mattress wrap, etc). Paul eventually ditched that tone in his voice and gave me some advice. (One reason for the downgrade in "Professionalism.")
I was not there on the loading day (I live in another state), but my son said that the guys were very prompt, were kind and polite, worked super hard the entire time, and were very conscientious while loading the POD. Overall, he said they did a super great job! He took pictures of the loaded POD afterwords, and it looked pretty good to me!
Our move was a little complicated. My Boulder son completed his master's degree in May and would be moving to Europe in August to start his new job. Another son, in Texas, completed his undergraduate degree in May and would be moving into his first apartment in July to begin his master's degree in Texas. We had to get all of the Boulder, CO son's belongings out of his apartment in May and into my other son's Texas apartment, which wouldn't be available until July. We had to store everything in the meantime!
So, it seemed to us that the easiest, best way to do that was to use a moving & storage company like PODs or ABF.
BUT, I had read so many bad things about both PODs and ABF! As I was researching the move, so many moving companies told me that they hated working with PODs and with ABF. One company after the next said that the containers are much more difficult to load, because of the "moving system" those companies use to pick up, store, and release the containers. The stuff in PODs and other storage containers tend to shift during the move, which leads to damaged property, which makes everybody unhappy!
And so, I was quite nervous.
Sure enough, my Boulder son said that one of the movers commented a few times on how much more difficult it was to properly load a POD. They have to be sure that the weight is distributed evenly across the POD, for instance, instead of loading all the heavy stuff towards the back of a U-Haul truck bed, for instance. And they have to do a really great job tying everything down, too. Above all, I was looking for a conscientious, knowledgable loading crew.
After seeing how the POD was eventually released into my Texas son's apartment driveway last week, I can totally see what everybody was concerned about! The system that moves and loads/releases the container does so in short bursts -- let's down the front of the container a ways, then the back a ways, then the front a ways, then the back a ways, etc. Yikes.
But, much to my DELIGHT, as our paid movers on the OTHER end of the move (in Texas) unloaded all of our stuff, they repeatedly commented on what an excellent job The Moving Connection did while loading our POD! NONE of our stuff was damaged at all! Everything except the queen-sized bed seemed to be in EXACTLY the same location as the stuff was in my Colorado son's picture the day The Moving Connection loaded our POD! The queen-sized bed, which was loaded towards the back of the POD, had shifted ever so slightly against it's clothesline restraints, but not in any way that would damage it. EVERYTHING was in terrific shape 6 weeks later!
I was SO VERY PLEASED and GRATEFUL for a JOB WELL DONE!
The guys who came to load our stuff in Boulder, CO, really knew their stuff. They were kind, polite, helpful, knowledgable, hard-working, and all around great! Thanks, Moving Connection!
(One more reason for the slight downgrade in "Professionalism": One of the guys who came to the Boulder apartment did some inappropriate complaining about his employers and ... something else ... his job? ... his schedule? ... tips? (can't remember). Point is, my son mentioned that the one guy occasionally complained inappropriately about stuff that made him a little bit uncomfortable. If I were there when it happened, I could probably remember the details right now, but just the fact that my 24 year old son mentioned it rendered the incident, as a whole, memorable for me. Otherwise, both of the guys were really on their game and great!)
When they came and gave me a quote, I was told it could take up to 4 hours. This didn't make sense: It was a small condo, with very little furniture, and I was putting all of my boxes in the garage. The estimator said it could take less time, especially if I put the boxes in the garage. Let me cut to the punch: I was charged for 4-1/2 hours, which seemed quite excessive. The movers were slow, spent far too much time securing items in their truck, seemed to be chatting quite a bit. Sure enough, I just had a different mover move my stuff from the storage shed to my new home, and it took them almost half the time, going the very same distance. I would never recommend or hire these guys again.
I do wish the back office was more professional and communicated better. Here is my story: On my initial call, they employee asked me how big my house was and how much I had to move. I explained that I was moving from a 1200 square foot single family house and I had a lot of stuff. He did not think an in person estimate was necessary. This was a big mistake! I called them again a week before the move and asked them to make sure they brought a big truck and I was assured that they would. When they arrived, the movers surveyed my house and told me that the truck would not be big enough. They would have to make two trips and I would incur an extra hour of travel time because of it. I did not think I should pay extra just because they did not do a proper estimate or bring a big enough truck. A lot of arguing and wasted time ensued. Thankfully, the crew leader decided to ignore the instructions from his boss and just do the right thing ? not charge me for the drive time back. Overall, these guys are just OK. I hope to find a top rated Angies list moving company next time.
Initial estimate done in person was a little high, but that's fine -- I'd rather a slightly too high estimate than any surprises on moving day.
The move began 45 minutes late as the moving crew was lost and for some reason did not call us. On the other hand, they finished the whole move in less time than estimated and finished early anyway.
We contracted to have our washer and dryer hooked up upon arrival, and this was not done, but we didn't notice until the movers departed, which was too bad, but not the worst thing in the world.
This may be the first time I have hired professional movers, and not noticed any problems with scratches, dings, crushed boxes, or other problems. All our goods appear to have arrived without even slight damage at all. We have a large screen plasma TV which they wrapped, and a lot of wooden furniture, so I am especially pleased by the care they took with our belongings.
We'll definitely recommend this company to others in the Denver area.
