Petra Custom Builders is extremely professional and great to work with. I was impressed with their craft and quality of work and would highly recommend them , especially if you are looking to do a basement remodel. I chose to work with them because of their investment in giving back to the community through charitable partnerships, and would use them again based on my superb experience!

Working with Petra Custom Builders was an absolute pleasure. Not only were they extremely efficient, professional, and personable, but they were also extremely meticulous and conscientious in their work. They were both punctual and respectful of my schedule and realistic in the timeframe needed to execute the project. The also communicated to me daily what their plan was and what they intended to have completed, which allowed me to constantly feel in the loop. I would highly recommend them for any home-improvement project you are looking to take on. They listened intently to what I wanted the end result to be, and made realistic suggestions throughout to achieve my final vision. I am extremely satisfied with their work and am very excited to enjoy my new home.
Description of Work: The provider installed hardwood floors throughout, installed a new sliding door and front door, removed popcorn ceiling, installed granite countertops, installed 5-panel doors, new baseboards and casings, and new lighting fixtures throughout. They also installed a custom iron railing, custom closet inserts, painted the interior, and resurfaced the existing fireplace.

We found Steve's company on Angie's list and our basement remodel turned out great. His bid was not the lowest but we were interested in quality construction that looked like the rest of our new build home. Steve made several suggestions on finishes during the remodel that were practical and stylish. Steve has an eye for detail and came by to check out the project nearly everyday. Steve immediately addressed any concerns we had and made sure we were happy with the fixes. Steve's crew was professional and neat. The project was completed on time and under budget. We would not hesitate to use Steve's company again and we would recommend him to family and friends.

Petra Custom Builders did a great job remodeling my outdated bathroom. Steve Kitsmiller came out to do the estimate and gave a proposal. The proposal was detailed and accurate. The manager of the project, Brian Gurley, did a great job coordinating all the subcontractors and making sure that things were done right. They were very responsive. There were a few change orders needed due to unforeseen issues, but otherwise the estimate of the project was spot-on. I would hire them again.

His name is Steve Kitsmiller and he is operating under a different name now. It is Petra Custom Builder. They did really well. They are very busy so it can take quite a while to get on their schedule. The shower was $6,000, the window was $3,500 and the kitchen things were $1,500.
Description of Work: We used Kitsmiller Construction to put in a new window in our house in August. More recently they redid the master shower and did some minor things in the kitchen, such as replacing the backsplash.

Steve is a fantastic contractor and we feel lucky to have found him. Always courteous and professional, Steve met all of his timelines from start to finish coordinating framers, drywall, plumbing, electricians, painters and city inspectors. Our basement was transformed from bare concrete to a beautiful addition to our home. Steve was always available to discuss work that was being done and patiently worked with us for any mid-stream additions. The final tally came in under the original estimate even with some additional work added. Overall EXCELLENT SERVICE and I can feel confident giving Steve my HIGHEST recommendation.

If we could give Steve and his team a greater rating than A, we would! We cannot say enough great things about them. Steve went above and beyond all of our expectations, from both a professional and personal perspective. Our project started with finishing our 1500 sqft basement. Our basement was not a straight forward project since is a slightly unique shape and had other constraints: load bearing beams that had to be worked around, we were requesting extra windows and sliding doors drilled out and installed, standard plumbing to be rerouted, heated floors, etc. Steve was able to provide his experience and expertise on how to handle all these items. While interviewing other contractors for our basement, many said certain things we wanted to do were not possible but Steve found a way to make it all work. We were truly impressed at how much he paid attention to our interests, personalities and really got to know us. All of his custom designs and craftsmanship is a true reflection of who we are and that trait of his is one of a kind! After being so satisfied with his work on our basement, we asked Steve to remodel our main floor mud room, bathroom and garage (add organized storage). We were consistently kept in the loop of everything; his project management skills are outstanding. We were never once caught off guard by any scope creep and always had a detailed understanding of what was going on. He always kept us in line with our budget, which allowed us to plan effectively. Communication and responsiveness was outstanding. Every single one of his contractors was just as courteous and professional as Steve. We have 3 very small children so daily personal interactions and cleanliness of tools and dangerous objects was an important factor, which received an A+ in my book. I cannot think of one negative thing to say about them. Steve's workmanship, guidance and internal design touches were flawless. He provided a lot of custom build areas such as cabinets, shelving and doors. We never imagined our basement would ever look this great. We continuously receive compliments from our guests and we are proud to show it off! On an added note, we just survived the 100 year flood in Boulder County and our basement was as dry as can be!

The contractor came out to provide a bid, he measured and talked a little, did not offer up any input or suggestions. He said we would have to pay for the drawing of the floor plan and it would take 3 weeks to get us a bid. The other 2 bids we received were able to get us a bid and a drawing next day. We had to finally call this contractor to get a bid so that we could make a decision on which contractor to go with. We obviously did not choose this one and we would not call them back for any services in the future.

We took a look at his work and he drew us up some plans for me, some real simple stuff. And we got together and talked about it. I did like him. He was responsive and I think he probably would have done a good work if I chose to do something I would probably go back to use him. But it never got any further than a planning stage. He was very responsive, he got back to me. I looked at some work that he had done for someone else and the work was pretty high quality. He also just in conversation with him in planning stages he definitely was knowledgeable. It seemed to me like he knew what he was doing.

Steve was very professional and delivered a timely proposal for the work. When he came out to do the estimate, he was easy to talk with and it was evident that he knows his craft. His cost estimate was a little higher than the other 2 we received, but our decision to hire another contractor was based more on the fact that the other contractor exclusively remodeled basements. We will definelty consider hiring him for our future kitchen remodel and home addition.

Steve returned my call two days after I left my voicemail. He was polite, professional, asked me for more details on my project. After assessing my needs and his schedule, he honestly informed me that he didn't have enough time to travel to my location but that he could recommend someone else. Even though we won't be working together, he handled my call and project in a very professional manner.
Description of Work: I am renovating my basement, which is basically down to stud in many areas, into a functional garden apartment. I called and left a voicemail giving a brief overview of the project and left my name and number twice with a message detailing that I would like to meet and discuss a bid for the work at a time convenient to them.

Kitsmiller Construction did an incredible job on my home/kitchen remodel. I started with a pretty vague idea of how I wanted to remodel a section of my home (including raising ceilings to roof line and removing walls in a 100 year-old house) while having a roof replacement. Not only did they stick to their cost and time estimates very closely, but they were very helpful in suggesting design plans, finishes and ways of keeping costs down in certain areas. They were punctual about scheduled workdays and did a nice job of isolating the construction space from the rest of the home to keep dust and debris to a minimum in the rest of the house. I would recommend them for any residential construction project.

We had an out-of-the-ordinary refinish plan for our basement. Although we've since moved, we were refinishing the basement for our specific needs of family and work rather than more standard living space. We used the basement refinish to add an artists studio space, a playroom/workroom, and a movie theater. Much of the space was multiuse. Steve Kitsmiller worked with us on all of our unique ideas while keeping the cost to our budget and building everything to code. It was a fantastic space to our expectations and needs and we enjoyed it for over a year before we moved for work related reasons. Steve, although the general contractor, is a master carpenter and indulged our whimsy by building us a 6 foot sliding wall/door to the art studio entirely out of antique wooden typeset drawers. He also single handedly built approximately 30 ft. of installed desk and cabinet space with individual workspace lighting in the work/playroom. Doing all the carpentry work himself was how he kept a lot of the cost down and still got us what we wanted. I was very impressed by his skill, time management and completion ethic. Even though he was doing an out-of-the-ordinary job, he found ways to meet permit code and stick to full quality code in Electrical and HVAC. We've since moved into a completely finished house, but if we ever need new construction or remodel work I would certainly call Steve Kitsmiller.
Description of Work: Full finish of unfinished basement in late 50's ranch in Boulder CO. The work included: permitting, egress window expansion (including the engineering), electrical (including box upgrade and service upgrade), high-efficiency furnace and water heater upgrades, framing, insulating, drywall, custom cabinetry and doors, and full finish work including painting.

Description of Work: Steve was great to work with, even though we did not end up completing the project as planned, he was very responsive and helped us define our vision for the project and estimate costs. We were looking at putting in an elaborate floor to ceiling fireplace and mantle in our 2-story living room. We decided against the project not becuase of the cost or the estimate, we just decided that we did not want to do it afterall.

The estimate seemed competitive. We felt more of a connection with another company that does just basements. But if we do a remodel like an addition, which we are probably going to do in the next five to ten years, I think we would definitely get a bid for that from them. Steve Kitsmiller was a great person to work with. We are doing a basement finish; I know that he could do it, but we just decided to go with someone that was a little bit more local. They are based in Westminster and live closer to us.

My original request was submitted quite some time ago. Angies list presented me with a request to review past contacts. I had been having a great deal of difficulty getting a handyman or contractor to commit to fully replace my back entrance door. After so many "no shows" and "don't you have more work to do"s, I chose to use Angies list. I cannot speak to the past or current work/skills for Kitsmiller construction (I believe it is Steve), but the experience I had was that without saying outright that the job was too small, I was asked to put together a list of other needed items and get back to him. I chose not to get back to him because I felt the job was not viewed as important enough to complete just the door replacement.

It is unfortunate that I made this member feel as though his project was too small or not important. It was certainly not my intention. I am happy too take on projects of any size. He did indicate to me that there were other projects that he would like pricing on. It seemed reasonable to me that he clearly define the scope of work so that I could provide him with an estimate. At no point was I given the indication that the scope of work was limited to the rear entry door. I think that what we have here is simply an regrettable misunderstanding by both parties. I would like to note that his assessment of my punctuality and responsiveness is in error. I was early to our appointment, and I feel like our communication leading up to the appointment was handled in a timely manner.

Steve has been great to work with on both a personal and results level. He really knows his stuff and the quality of his work shows this. During the projects he keeps the work site clean, shows up regularly and lets you know if there are any expected delays ahead of time. By communicating throughout the project, he ensures that any changes or unexpected issues are resolved to meet your expectations. We have worked with several different contractors over the years in construction and have found Steve to be the best of all of them. We will definitely use him for any future projects and highly recommend him to all of our friends.

I think it would be helpful if Angie's list asked contractors to describe what sorts of jobs they are NOT willing to do. Based on prior Angie's list reports, I sent an email to the company with a description of the work needing to be done, and asked if they would like to provide an estimate. I received a very prompt reply of "yes" and we set up an appointment. Steve was on time for the appointment. I showed him the work that needed to be done on our front porch -- repairing and replacing parts of roof, vinyl overhang, metal supports. It was then that I found out he thought this was "handyman's" work, and he was a general contractor, also that he wouldn't be able to do anything with the metal or vinyl (first time I had heard of this). And when I asked him to provide some details in an estimate, he said he doesn't do that for "small projects," because it takes time away from his family. I showed him the shed, which is really an outbuilding that would make a good office. We want it sided to match the vinyl siding on the house, and windows installed. He asked a question I thought was unprofessional - "what are you going to do in your little office?" He then said he works only in wood, and doesn't do vinyl siding. So he "was going to pass" on providing an estimate. My rating on responsiveness reflects a balance between good punctuality and a poor decision to come out in the first place. My rating on professionalism reflects the decision to give the estimate, and the statements I describe above.

Response from Petra Custom Builders
As a contractor and business owner it is my responsibility to accept work that I feel to be a good fit for my company. One aspect of this project (the vinyl siding), was not within the scope of my companies capabilities. While we have extensive experience with wood, fiber-cement and composite siding products, we do not have the special tooling required to install vinyl. It would have been difficult for me to find a subcontractor that would be willing to take on the vinyl siding on such a small project. It was my feeling that the customer would be better served by a contractor that was set up for this work. I did indicate to the customer that I do handyman/repair work projects on a time and material basis only. The reason being, is that estimates do take a good deal of time to put together. I ask for no compensation for this time, and so I need to use the time wisely. I reserve this time to provide free estimates for projects other that handyman/ repair work. I did enjoy meeting with this customer and it is unfortunate that I left her with an unfavorable impression. It was not my intention to be unprofessional or offend her in any way. I thank her for bringing her concerns to my attention so that I may improve upon my customer relations and communications skills.

Steve and his team were terriffic. They came exactly on the time indicated, performed their work in an entirely professional and competent manner, and cleaned the place up to better than original condition before leaving. Cost charged for the work was extremely reasonable. I will have Steve and his team back to my home whenever I need home services again. Highest possible rating.

Smoothly and on time. My husband is an engineer and we are particular about contractors, we had to terminate a prior contractor due to the complexity of this project. Kitsmiller delivered on all aspects of the contract. They made sure we were completely happy with the finished project even months later. Three months after our finished project our shower diverter valve was defective, they replaced and repaired the problem without a delay or grumble. Would use Kitsmiller construction for any of our home remodel projects.
Description of Work: Kitsmiller Construction did a exemplary job for our master bathroom remodel. They were also helpful with design and any redesign that occurred during construction. They tore out the old bathroom; fixtures and all, changed the plumbing, the doors, tiled, built custom cabinets and rebuilt the bathroom better than my expectations.

It took him only about 6 weeks to do all of the construction. There were never delays due to job conflicts or missing sub-contractors. These were 2 conditions I was adamant about avoiding and his reputation for getting jobs done in a timely fashion was one of the reasons I hired him. He more than lived up to that reputation. He managed to get me more than I originally planned on and still came in under budget. His attention to detail and craftsmanship are excellent. His work site was the cleaned at the end of every day, (most of the time it was probably the cleanest part of my house). I cannot recommend him highly enough!
Description of Work: Steve Kitsmiller was amazing. My project was delayed over a year from his initial bid. In the interim, the City of Boulder passed the most obnoxious building codes ever. For a mere 192 sq. ft remodel of my porch to a heated all season room, it took nearly 3 months to get the permit and cost nearly $3000.00 for JUST the permit and the additional 'studies' and testing they required. I was amazed that Steve didn't quit the project, which was really a very small job for him, just to avoid the months of aggravation. Fortunately, for me, he persisted and was incredibly patient with my changes and additions as work progressed.
