Contractor was awarded the work from competitive bids due to thorough review of the plans and both knowledge of the applicable building codes and proactive nature of working with that office throughout the construction process. Work began well and remained pretty much on schedule, though there was some difficulty lining up subcontractor trades due to seasonal and pent-up demand, requiring additional contractor effort to find available alternates. About two-thirds through the project the contractor got distracted by another job, and for an entire week no one showed up to work, nor was there any communication from the contractor as to why. Detailed schedules/milestones previously agreed to the week before were missed and/or ignored - subcontractors failed to show up, leaving me to notify the contractor of this as he was off-site working the other job. Toward the end of the project short cuts were taken and quality suffered (examples include standard interior hanging doors were ordered, then the bottom was cut off to fit the shorter height-opening leaving one to reach down to the door handle;my purchasing material for subcontractor to keep schedule though this was to be purchased by contractor). At project end, and to this day, contractor owes me over $100 and never completed the bathroom tile purchase or installation, even though he promised several times to do so, saying "I'm good for my word." In the end, I have poorly installed doors, newly installed HVAC vents that have little air flow, a failed electrical outlet, poor plumbing routing, uncompleted tile installation, and a subcontractor calling me saying he wasn't paid.
