#1 Radon

The installer arrived when promised. The installer needed to saw a hole in the exterior wall of the home for the radon exhaust pipe and drill through a few joists to access electrical. He neither used a drop cloth nor did he bother to clean up the mess! The wood particles went all over the floor and into boxes that were in the area. Very inconsiderate and unprofessional!! This system employeed low quality plastic rain gutter to route the radon exhaust up the side of the home. If only I had known this in advance I'd have looked elsewhere. I expected schedule 40 PCV for the exhaust as it is more durable and the larger diameter tube is quieter. The gutter pipe was not sealed at all the seams and exhaust air was pouring out in several places!! The thin gutter pipe was buzzing against the side of the home and the entire system was extremely loud. It has introducted over 15db of noise (centered around 122Hz) to most of our home. I took some corrective action and sealed the seams and added 1/2" rubber gaskets between the pipe and the house. This helped about 5db, but the narrow rain gutter exhaust pipe is simply louder than schedule 40 PVC. The exhaust fan isn't all the quiet either and contributes noise to the home. Other vendors paint the radon exhaust pipe to match the home. This vendor did not. The basement radon level has gone down to 1.70pCi/l from 4.78pCi/l.
