Sanded and refinished our oak floors for the second time. Came out great. Great Service, fair pricing and no surprises.
- We had a tight schedule with a upcoming move in date. Mike Pillar came to our new home, and got back to us with an estimate. We decided to accept his bid, selected one of the samples that he provided, and went to his shop to sign the contract. At that time we were told that the wood that we had selected was not in stock, and it would take six weeks to get. He suggested an alternative, that was available immediately. We were disappointed but had a time crunch, took the new sample to our home, and determined that is as an acceptable replacement, (although visibly was inferior quality 25% thinner), than our original selection. The following week, we met with the installers, and proceeded to leave them to work, when the foreman came running after me, and wanted to show me that the wood that they were installing, did not match the sample, that was still in my house. It was clearly a different dye lot. I was very upset and got in touch with Mike Pillar. He insisted that it was the same, even though myself, my husband, and his employee clearly saw a difference. I was thrilled to find out that the original wood that we had selected suddenly was available, however, we were now being charged an extra $680 to get the floor that we were originally quoted on. The explanation that we were given for the price increase was that the stairs cost more with that wood, even though that flooring isn't even on the stairs. The stairs are stained wood. In the end the quality of the work, and the overall pricing was good. I didn't appreciate the bait and switch tactics, the unreasonable price increase, or the way that I was spoken to by the owner.
We had used this firm earlier on a job in the mid-Los Angeles area with similar results.
"Thank you [member name removed] for taking the time to give our company a review with your experience with us."
"[member name removed], First and foremost, thank you for giving us an honest review of your experience as we are always trying to improve our services. Id like to first start off by saying that there must have been some sort of miscommunication between yourself and I, as I must of thought that a light sanding and 1 coat (recoat) was what you were looking for. I understood that your floors were thin and once I saw the board you showed me I did indeed realize that they were very thin. With that being said, I still must of thought that you wanted to sand and refinish your floors because a recoat would not have provided the results I believed you were looking for. I would never try to up-sell anyone or sell them anything other then what they were looking for. We have been in business since 1979 and you don't stay in business for this long by using those types of sales techniques. To be perfectly honest with you as well, a reocat is much more profitable then a refinish is for us anyways. Much more labor, supplies, and liability when refinishing a floor versus recoating a floor. Lastly, Im glad that at the end of the day you achieved the results you were looking for and I would like to appologize for the mishap. Thank you for your time -Michael"
For the install, day one was carpet removal, grinding old tar off the concrete and floor leveling. Everything was covered and a few heavy objects were moved to the garage. Days two and three were actually laying the wood. The crew answered my many questions and took special care to make the room transitions flush, as opposed to putting in those wood risers that people trip over. The areas around the french doors really look great.
A couple days later we noticed an unforeseen problem and the next day they were back and fixed it in a jiffy. No problems found since. I installed the baseboards myself so I can't comment on what type of job they do on those. Compliments keep pouring in from our friends and neighbors so we won't hesitate to recommend them in the future.
Also, their prices were very fair. This was a fairly big job. It took 9 days. Great attention to detail from the entire crew. The preparation was really well done. They even did special touches that were not originally part of the specified job. Overall great experience. Next time I would use Pillar and not worry about getting multiple bids.
