The overnight stay is a little expensive, but worth it for peace of mind. Because my dog is older, we really appreciated the direct access to the hospital if needed. As can happen in large breed dogs, he did have an episode of bloat when he was last kenneled, but they recognized it quickly and got him to the hospital next door right away. Emergency vet treatment saved his life and he recovered quickly and was able to go home within 2 days of that, doing well.
I recommend the place highly to all my friends with pets.
"Thank you, for taking the time to write such a thoughtful and thorough review. Providing our pet parents and our pet guests with excellent care and service is our top priority."
"Thank you so much for your review. We are thrilled our free webcam service was able to give you piece of mind that your pet was safe and happy."
First of all, I've never been able to speak with a live person on my first try. You get a long-winded message about how they like to give their complete attention to each guest and they will call you back when they can give you that same attention, so you have to leave a message and wait for a call back.
The first time I boarded my dog was about a year ago and I was relatively satisfied. I used and quot;the most budget friendly accommodationand quot; that they offer and I had him screened for the Dogie Day Camp which is an additional $35 per day, but they get to play most of the day in a large yard with other dogs and get lots of attention, fresh air, sunshine, and exercise. They had groomed him as I asked (and paid for). He seemed happy when I picked him up.
Several days after he came home, he became lethargic and started this hacking kind of cough. Sounded almost like a pig grunting. I took him to the vet and explained that he had been boarded next door a week earlier. The doctor diagnosed him with kennel cough, but tried to tell me that too much time had passed for me to associate it with that boarding. I then did a little research and found that the incubation period is from 3 - 10 days....BINGO. I spent $93 on an antibiotic and my dog got well.
Since I was relatively happy the last time, except for the fact that he got sick there, I decided to board him there again a little over a week ago when my usual dog sitter couldn't take care of him. They are a and quot;boutiqueand quot; pet hotel right? So once again, I left a voice mail and waited to hear back. They called back within two hours and had room. I asked if the groomer was available over the weekend and they told me that the groomer was booked all weekend, but had an availability at 8:30 am on Monday morning. I really didn't need him to stay over Sunday night, but rather than pick him up Sunday evening and bring him back Monday morning, I took the grooming appointment and boarded him for an extra night specifically to get him groomed. She told me that he would be done around noon on Monday, an that someone would call me when he was ready to be picked up.
At 8:40 am on Monday I was on a call and a number I did not recognize came in on call waiting. I finished my call, listened to the voice mail from the groomer at the Barkley calling for instructions on how I wanted the dog groomed. I called back at 8:54 am, to the number she had left, and again the long-winded out going message. I left a voice mail with detailed instructions on how to cut the dog, and left my number in case she had questions beyond what I had described. When I didn't hear back, I assumed that my instructions were sufficient and I'd be hearing from them around noon. Noon came and went and finally around 3:40 pm I called again, no live person, so I left another message saying that I had returned the call in the am, and that I hope I hadn't misunderstood that they would call me when he was ready to be picked up. I had some plans in Ventura and didn't want to be out of the area when he was ready to be picked up, so I canceled those plans.
Finally, after waiting all day, hearing nothing from the two voice messages I had left and not wanting to talk to a machine again, I headed over at about 5:15 pm. The girl at the front desk called up my dog's record and said and quot; That's 3 nights of boarding, 2 days of dogie day camp, and a bath, that will be $218and quot; I clarified that I had asked for a grooming, not a bath and she responded by saying simply that she would call them and let them know that I was here to pick him up and asked me to have a seat. As I took the leash from the girl who brought him out, the girl at the desk turned back to me and said and quot;He did not get groomed, he was bathed, his nails, clipped, and his ears were cleaned, but you were scheduled for 8:30 am and they needed instructions on how you wanted him groomed.and quot; I explained to her all that I said above. She said that since I and quot;supposedlyand quot; called with instructions I could bring him back another time and they would give him a complementary grooming. I asked about the $55 for the extra night that I left him there specifically so he'd get groomed first thing in the am and she said that only the grooming would be comped if I wanted to bring him back another day.
If that's not bad enough, AGAIN, he got kennel cough while there and I spent another $93 on a vet visit and antibiotics. This time the vet didn't try to tell me that the two were unrelated.
We have also used The Barkley for grooming our dog. He always comes out perfectly groomed, and the cost is on a par with the other walk-in pet salons we have used in the past.
"Thanks,we love having you in Day Camp. Come back soon. Woof!"
"Woof! We are happy your pet had a great boarding experience."
"We are disappointed to read that you had a less than stellar experience. We really want to make things right. Please call us."
