I took our 2001 Passat into Moore's Precision Auto in Ventura, Ca. this morning. I called their office number at around 7:50 this morning and left a message on their answering device, along with my phone number asking for someone to call me back, figuring I'd hear from them tomorrow because of today being Labor day and a holiday and most places being closed.
To my surprise, and delight, I got a call back from Sergio at around 10:30 telling me that he was in the shop today. We discussed basically everything that I had done trying to get the car to start and he told me that if I could get it towed into his shop he'd take a look at it.
Long story short... He was able to run a diagnostic and it told us that basically it was a relay that supplied power to the ECU/ECM. He ran a fused jumper wire from the positive terminal of the battery into the port where the relay would have provided power IF it had been working correctly and had my son try to start the car. IT STARTED AND RAN FINE !!!
He didn't have that relay in stock and we could not locate one locally at any of the local parts stores but... his supplier has one in stock and he will have it tomorrow morning on his way into work.
Bottom line... cost me $98.00 for the diagnostic, ON A HOLIDAY !!!, and about $40 for a OEM #30 relay.
Sergio COULD have charged me a LOT more for his time, and then gouged me on a part that I might not have needed, but he didn't.
HONEST mechanics ARE still out there.
I would, and DO, HIGHLY recommend Moore's Precision Auto to anyone needing quality work done on Volkswagen, Audi, Volvo, and BMW's.
