Shelby Wood Design

We found Shelby Wood on Angie?s List after we had already begun an extensive renovation of our town home. We suddenly realized that we simply were not capable of designing a living space that we could live in and enjoy. We needed a real professional. Shelby came in and assessed the situation. She talked to us about what we hoped to accomplish ? what we wanted our home to look like. She spent time examining our possessions, especially a large number of art and decorative pieces, which were to become central in the final design. She then went off to draw her plans. When Shelby returned, she already had a firm grasp of what she wanted to create for us and set about convincing us, which was not too hard to do. We really liked her ideas a lot. Once she had the space designed, she turned her full attention to finding the materials and furnishings. Shelby spent countless hours searching the net. She made trips to lighting and furniture stores all over the city. She visited antique shops in the area. And we accompanied her on these great pilgrimages. In the end, she found what we needed. In some cases, she designed furniture to fit the space and our taste and had it made to her specifications, including a living room sofa and chair, kitchen table, and guest bedroom stools. When the design required something truly unique and special, she found the craftsmen to create it for us. This included a beautiful reclaimed-wood mantle and bookcase. In other cases, she found the exact pieces we had in mind, such as mid-century Danish and art deco chairs, and had them refinished and reupholstered. At the end of the project, Shelby helped us in the placement of our art work, pulling all the design elements together in a finished space. Shelby Wood has a really great sense of design. She has a wonderful feel for color, which we knew from looking at her web page. She has great energy and enthusiasm, so she never tired of looking for just the right chair or lamp. And she has a personality that makes stressful work enjoyable. When we sit in our living room, we feel contented and happy at the transformation from plain to beautiful. One really nice by-product is the many wonderful compliments we receive from visiting friends. We loved working with Shelby and would highly recommend her to anyone seeking design help.

I had previously dabbled in consulting for environmentally safe practices for babies and wanted to extend my knowledge into our home. We had some bumps along the way (how to deal with lead paint, concern about absestos, etc.) but I truly appreciated Shelby's willingness to new learn things and take ecoproofing principles into her design. She bought ecofriendly paint, found some fantastic antique tables, a spectacular coffee table (which I keep getting offers on to sell but we're holding onto to it) and some great mid century chairs. I feel like everything we own, we can sell for more than or equal to what we paid. In keeping with the eco theme, we wanted things that were timeless. More about Shelby....Shelby has a great eye for style, colors and really listened to what we wanted. She is a designer but also takes on some roles of general contractor. We found other interior designers to have minimums per room that you need to spend and they are only affiliated with certain stores. While this approach is probably much more organized and and quicker, it's definitely more expensive but more importantly, we wanted something more authentic than a show room. In the end, for the price of decorating one room, we were able to fully furnish 3 rooms and partially re-do our kitchen.

What can I say about Shelby. She's fun, spunky, and, best of all, talented, creative, meticulous and professional! I don't know a thing about interior design, but working with Shelby was definitely a wonderful experience. In 3 weeks, the entire remodel was finished. Out was 1950. In was the contemporary and minimalist style which I prefer. Shelby and her team took care of: drywall, plumbing, electrical, tiling. Actually, they did everything!! And of course, all the design/decor work required to bring it all together. Some people just have the "it" factor. Shelby is one of them. She helped me through all the design choices: paint color, granite, travertine, furniture, lighting and decor. Best of all, she kept me in budget. I had a number of general contractors bid for the work, but in the end, I went with Shelby and saved at least $10K. People say, "You get what you pay for," but in this case, going with Shelby was the best decision hands down. I highly recommend her! Shelby is extremely talented and knowledgeable. Her paint color selections for us completely transformed our house and we are so happy we found her.

The great thing about her is that she can do large or small jobs within your budget and make any living space something fantastic. She is a visionary when it comes to interior design and can change the entire look of a room by doing just a few minor adjustments. Whatever your interior design needs are she can fulfill them.
