The worked on the roof in the rain to stop the leak and came back out when it stopped raining to actually fix the roof.
fTwo weeks ago, after another heavy rain, we were cleaning out a storage closet in the master bedroom and discovered mold growing on some of the contents of the closet. Upon removing the contents of the closet, we discovered mold on the interior walls of the closet as well.
Alarmed as to the potential for health hazard from the mold, we consulted an industrial hygiene management company who recommended opening the wall to try to discover the extent of the problem. Unfortunately mold had spread throughout the interior wall cavity, and the true extent of the contamination is unknown at this point.
We filed a claim with our insurance company who sent out a roofing inspector to determine the source of the original water leak.
To our dismay, the insurance company representative found a number of leak sources due to improper workmanship when the roof was installed.
We cannot help but believe that this nightmare that we now have to deal with during the process of mold remediation; which involves moving out of our home while the removal process is underway, and dealing with the subsequent repair of walls, closet, and repainting-could have been avoided if Charlie had been more attentive to the workmanship of his employees and paid a bit more attention to our concerns when we initially reported the roof leak to him at the beginning of the year.
"We concluded our investigation and the results the followings: The new roof was installed over existing roof which is align with the city of Glendale code requirements and according with the written contract between the Homeowner and Octagon. There is no sheet inspection was required, and there is no removal was required. The Homeowner accepted to get the permit to avoid extra charges. When the job was completed homeowner inspected the roof himself and he was fully satisfied and give a best review. We try to find out a problem, since the roof was overall excellent condition except the drain was clogged. Since this house is in a high, gusty wind area sometimes goes to 24-45 mph, sometimes even goes up to 50-60 mph. It is very crucial that the drain has to be keep clean some times weekly. It was advised more than one occasion to the homeowner that keep the drain clean, and his own admission he always had problem with that many times he forgot to clean it.. The past several months he installed a wire mesh on the top of the drain and we attempted to clean the clogged drain, lifting up the wire mesh left 4 holes. We repaired and re-sealed all area with city inspector approval. Homeowner home is 80 years old (built 1933) and suffers from past water leaks, incurred prior to Octagon was hired to work on this project. The house has no insulation, and still has the original wet plaster instead of modern gypsum drywall. The wet plaster at least 8-10 times more durable than “sheetrock”, withstand moist and mold. There is a lime plaster which contains crystalline; it grows very slowly if at all. In the outside stucco evidence of large cracks, where the water seeping though. The bedroom has sign water damage below the window from the outside stucco. Above the closet area water leaks occurred dozens of times in the last 70 years. There was evidence of cracked stucco at the drain area. Water intrusion cracked stucco leaks evidence show in multiply rooms. There is evidence of earthquake damage at least 20 years old in the bathroom shower wall porcelain tile has large cracks where the water seeping through the wall which is a mutual wall with the Master Bedroom. The bathroom ceiling and walls evidence of prior leaks, since the bathroom had an old, broken skylight prior to Octagon changed it to an energy efficient skylight. Octagon is not responsible for past damage from old water leaks all over the house, specifically in a Master Bedroom closet. The leaks happened different times in the past 70 years. The contract between homeowner and Octagon note on page on that there was evidence of prior leaks. Please be aware according to contract Octagon is not responsible for any blockage of gutters or roof drains, and is not responsible for any interior damage. In any event, as set forth above, the leak homeowner experienced was not caused by Octagon. Homeowner completed a leak detection test on 4/14/15 and water test by American Leak Detection Company on 4/23/14. The leak detection test found no evidence of active moisture. The water test according to homeowner emails on 4/27/15 found no water leaks. We always give a benefit of the doubt and investigate before make any decision. We went above and beyond to handle this issue, the homeowner has his set ways, was not willing to work with us to find a problem. He just wanted someone to rebuild his house. He knows he had a problem, because it was a long lasting problem, it was not just happened. We spend time and money to find out the problem, but Octagon is not at fault."
1. The workmanship on the roof itself was very good. We have had several significant rainfalls and no issue with leakage.
2. The overall cost was competitive, and in fact slightly lower than other bids received.
3. The company was willing to work with us on an installment plan that made it easier for us to pay for the new roof.
There were, however, several issues we had with Octagon:
1. The project took longer than anticipated (about 3 weeks in total). Some of this was due to extreme heat during the first stages of the project, but even after accounting for these days it still took about a week longer than anticipated. It took numerous phone calls with the owner to finally get a larger crew on site to finish the work in a timely manner.
2. Overall, the owner was not very communicative during the project. It took a lot of proactive phone calls to get updates on the schedule, additional costs, etc. The owner rarely visited the work site, instead relying on a foreman.
3. We had an issue with fascia boards that were installed poorly and not painted to match the white trim of the house. Ultimately the owner agreed to fix the boards and paint them, but only after repeated calls and us withholding final payment.
"Homeowners are a young couple, inexperienced in construction with unrealistic expectations. They purchased a “flipped” house, which looks good cosmetically, but had a bad roof. House suffered earthquake damage and structural movement. Structural repairs has been attempted, some has been not complete. First proposal was e-mailed on June 7,2014, and it was keep changing according to his request. Final proposal was mailed on August 9,2014 and Homeowner signed on August 15,20124. The month of August, our vacation season starts and the temperature was over 100 degrees. Homeowners did not had the money and they were completely fine if the roof is waterproof condition by October. The project was supervised by the Contractor as much as it was necessary. We completed this job on time according to the contract.. Homeowners were surprised that the construction takes longer than 45 minutes especially when homeowner takes several days to make a simple decision. Homeowner called several times after hours, and the phone calls were returned the following morning. According to Homeowner this is “poor” communications. Homeowners were very happy with their job when we finished and they offered a referral. Especially helped them out with interest FREE payment schedule. Four month later we received the final payment."
"Customer had long lasting roof problem which was consisted from two problems: 1,) Leak from the roofing system 2.) Water intrusion from modern, faulty, structural design, where water intrusion occurred from stucco surface as well. Customer was very frustrated with long lasting leak problem what many other roofers attempted to correct unsuccessfully. Therefore customer called for an independent roof inspection to find out what is the problem, what needs to be done, and which roofing company to choose to carry out the work. Our inspection was solely provided independent, expert opinion how to fix the problem. We were not even provided a written estimate with dollar amount since that was not requested. If Octagon Roofing Co.Inc. Inspector goes up on the roof and after “5 minutes” inspection comes up with the ultimate solution for the problem – what other roofing companies were not able to figure out in the past several years – most customers would call this person an EXPERT on his field. Most clients would have been delighted if this person had inspected the roof years ago. Client would have saved on interior damages, repair costs thousand and thousands of dollars damages. Most experienced homeowner would rate this service A+"
"Homeowner must have mixed us up with a other Company, because our estimate was $ 480.00 including refund fee for inspection."
"Member purchased a new home, built, approx. 7 years ago. General Home Inspector find cracked, and broken tiles, suggested calling for a Roof Inspection. We responded to member request the same day to schedule the appointment. Responsiveness should be A. Inspector arrived 5 minutes earlier than scheduled time. Punctuality should be A. Roof Inspector walked around the house with the Homeowner, checked the roof edges. After ground inspection, inspector went up to the 2 story house to inspect the roof. Tile roof has been found very good condition,- also found several cracked and broken tiles. Complete inspection finds no other problem, since the roof is new. Normally inspection takes 30 minutes to 1 hour of this type of building with the new roofing system. Inspector always spend as much time as necessary to find and identify all visible problems. Inspector explained the findings and solution to member to his full satisfaction. Inspection result to be mailed or e-mailed from the office, depending the member request. Inspection report and estimate was e-mailed to client the next morning. Member was very satisfied with our service. No additional question or clarification was requested. Therefore the quality and professionalism of service should be A. Price of the service accepted. Price for the inspection normally $ 250.00 charge. Most client opinion: the independent and unbiased professional opinion for $ 100.00 is well worth it and it is great value. Price should be A"
"We have received a request from the message center by e-mail on August 15,2013. In a few hours later the same day we send our respond and scheduled the appointment by email at the requested day August 21, 2013 Charlie showed up for the appointment on time. Meet with the member. The member told Charlie he already have 2 other estimate, he wanted to have a third independent opinion before he makes his decision because he has limited funds. He asked Charlie if it is OK. for him to come up to the roof and participating in the evaluation and point out his concerns. Charlie spend about 25 minutes discussing all different options and answering his concerns. Next day inspection result and estimate was e-mailed to member based on the conversation. Total of seven e-mails has been exchanged between Octagon Roofing and the member. Member wanted to get a full explanation on the flat roofing material. The 4th. E-mail (August 28,2013) He requested estimate for the premium energy cap system and he said “we might not able to afford it but we would love to have a choice” The last email we received (7th.) September 2, 2013. He said “nice to have a contractor respond quicly. It tells a lot of your company. I am still evaluating all proposals and weighting my options.” Based on his opinion Responsiveness and over all rating should be A. General Roof Inspection purpose: evaluating the roof condition and providing honest opinion the homeowner/member to avoid on expensive interior damages, inflated repair cost, budgeting for future major roof expenses/roof replacement if that is the last option NOTE: If the member has limited funds and the roof is too old that is not the inspection result or the inspector fault."
Octagon Roofing came out and gave us a very thorough inspection and estimate. The work to be done was simple enough
so we went with our regular roofer for the work. But I appreciate Angie's list offering such a deal and I feel the price was worth the time and effort Octagon Roofing spent to give such a detailed estimate.
"Responsiveness should be “ A” since “They did the work shortly after I purchased the Big Deal” “He got here about 15 minutes early” Punctuality should be “A” 152 point inspection is a pre-printed form with 2 color copy based on our 30 years roofing experience. This form is appreciated at least 99% of our customers and find it very informative. Cut down volume of un-necessary paperwork’s. Summarize ALL problems for easy understanding, not limited to further explanation if requested by customers either in writing or verbally. It is not a Xerox copy. Unfortunately we were not disclosed escrow information or the member address so we could mail him the original what we usually do. We only had the member e-mail address. Charlie got to the property 15 minutes earlier and exchanged information with his Agent. When the member arrived he specifically questioned if the home needs a new roof? He requested this inspection because he needs the documentation for his negotiation. He had many question, more than usually anyone ask especially when they do not own the home yet. Charlie giving all different options, - discussing the color of the new shingles, flashing, clean up, warranties etc. Spend at least extra 30 minutes talking to the member. Everything went fine, he was very satisfied. The purpose of the roof inspection stating the facts of the roof condition, providing documentation, repair/replace cost or other recommendations. Inspection time takes approx. 2-4 hours. That includes: secretarial/office work, traveling time, operating vehicle, inspection time, spending time with customer. The $ 100 charge is very reasonable. If he had any other question or concern as a “prospective buyer” he should have called back after the inspection, but he did not since he clearly understood everything. He obviously loved the house since he end up buying it over the asking price, but he may not got as much credit for “repairs” as he would hoped for. That is not our fault."
