There were a number of issues with Solar City that caused delays in the project but Mike's rolled with the punches and did a great deal to keep the project on track even though they ended up not making as much as they'd anticipated because of these delays. The Owens Corning Platinum Warranty requires that certain conditions for waterproofing be met. Mike's project manager coordinated the choice of flashing (waterproofing) that would go around each stantion intended to hold a support for the solar panels. When Solar City delivered the wrong flashing, my project manger from Mike's is the one that insisted the correct parts be obtained and used. I ended up with a cosmetic issue with the panels but Mike's did everything they could to ensure everything went well for me both from their end and the Solar City end.
The waranties from both Owens Corning and Mike's are great. The Owens Corning platinum guarantee and life of the roof work guarantee offered by Mikes are both transferable if I sell the home.
The roof is very attractive and only the best materials were used. The people who did the work were courteous and professional and for the most part came through with everything promised. The only issue we had had to with something Mike's had warned me about - the decades worth of accumulated dust that will rain down from an open garage ceiling when work is done on the roof. This was particularly important to us because there is a full workshop in our garage. When tarps put up by the demolition crew were later taken down when they left, the roofer who took over forgot to put them back. He was extremely apologetic and did the best he could to clean up. His work on the roof was beautiful and made up for the dust. Clean up is one of the biggest issues when choosing a roofer and other than this one incident, Mike's is very expert in minizing any damage to your home and in cleaning up after themselves.
Mike's required only a 10% deposit with the balance payable when the job was done. The Owens Corning Energy Star roof gets you a rebate from the LADWP and Mike's was very helpful providing and pre-populating as much of the rebate forms as possible.
I would recommend Mike's to anyone and hope to be able to hire them again down the road to paint the house.
OK, back to business. He gave us a reasonable price estimate. With his company had been there for 40 years, we trust him that he will provide good service. Yes, it is hard for a company to survive so he must got good tradition to keep it.
We didn't get any surprise during one week work time. There were no rain and our roof is mostly in good condition after they remove the old material. The workers came very early, and they worked whole day on our roof. They are very patient and not rushed to finished the job. So I think that they must did a good job that way. Tony changed two roof fans and he charged us with a reasonable price on that. He send us some addresses he worked on before the project started and we picked the right color. We really like the color we picked. So it all ends to be good.
I still find some nails after they left. It isn't a lot, just a couple. I don't think it is a big issue given my garden is kind of messy and we got a big project. Still, I wish that they run some magnite tool to collect all the nails.
Yes, do give this company a chance if you are looking for a roofer. We will refer them to all our friends.
"A refund check was given for tile not used. To complete this job quicker we did send more workers than originally estimated. If the project was bid out on a hourly rate then this claim would have value, but we gave a project price not an hourly rate and all contracted work was completed. We also spot painted an area that was not in this scope of work for no extra fee. In hindsight, if the project took longer than two days would Maureen Odell have paid us more?"
