They did a pretty good job for us all in all I would say. There were add-ons from every company I spoke to. There was also the need for things to occur at a very specified time period and I think they are the ones that had the opening.
From my first call with Dan, he was clear and helpful in answering my questions and explaining the way they work. I planned on taking the day off and helping with the move so i decided to go with an hourly rate. I was told the rate for 3 men and a truck, and that there was a $50 fee for fuel and that travel time between homes would be counted at a 15 minute minimum. This was fine with me as I was moving 5 miles away (4.37 per mapquest). Also that materials used would be extra. As I was packing everything myself before hand, and we had plenty of boxes, I was also OK with this. Dan was friendly and helpful and his attitude on the phone really helped sell the service vs the other places I looked into.
Christian, Brian and one other gentleman (Ernesto, I want to say?) arrived on time and looked at the workload. I think it was a bit overwhelming to them as I had a lot of boxes and my house was on a hill with no direct street access so that meant up and down a lot of stairs. That seemed to delay the start a bit, but maybe they were just getting a plan together, but the first half hour did not seem especially productive. They went over the rate again with one small difference. I was told the drive time between houses was charged double, and nothing about a 15 minute minimum. Again, being fewer than 5 miles away, I was Ok with it. Also the supplies charge was mentioned and that I would mostly likely need shrinkwrap on the larger pieces of furniture.
Once the work got started, they worked tirelessly. And it was tiring. The stairs made a difference and as I was hauling boxes up with them, I know it didn't take long to feel worn out by the constant climbing. In fact, the loading of the truck took 3 times longer than unloading. But they pushed through, taking a short break a few hours in and then we bought lunch, but otherwise they worked pretty much non-stop, and they were pleasant and professional to be around. Nothing to complain about there. They also took care of our things, probably more than the things warranted in many cases.
At the other house, as we weren't fully sure where everything was going to go, we picked a room for the majority of the boxes so we had a place to quickly dump them and when it came to the larger furniture, they place everything where we asked them to - whether it was upstairs, in the back yard, or in a particular room. The only item damaged was a piece of our table which is constructed from an old mission/ranch door and a piece that jutted out from the end got knocked and broke off. They did apologize and by that time, I barely cared but looking back on the moment, it would have been nice if that had been addressed a little more thoroughly. They suggested we could probably glue it back on, and an I'm sorry, but that was it.
Now, about the price. Ultimately I paid less than other quotes I got for the full job, but i also worked along side them and helped keep it moving. I'm not sure if it would have been more worth it to just work that day and earn more than I saved, but I did want to be part of it. So as a whole, comparing to other possible costs, it was fair and even cheaper. Here is my only complaint. I save it for the end because the rest of the service was very good and this is the one problem I have with what happened (if you ignore the table piece, which ultimately was fairly inconsequential).
It's 4.37 miles as I've said, from one house to the other. I left five minutes after they did and arrived at the new house in seven minutes. I unloaded my car and cleared out some space in the house, opened the garage, and fifteen minutes later they had not arrived. I called thinking the must have gotten lost. They were just around the corner and pulling on to the street right then. They went and got water and snacks, which I don't have a problem with. Except that the 7 minute trip was counted as 30 minutes and then doubled so that I paid an hour's cost for them to drive 4.37 miles. And I already had paid a $50 fuel fee. So $167 for the drive over. I'm not thrilled with that. Perhaps I could have made a bigger deal about it at the time but I was just trying to get the job done and at that point, I was ready to be finished
The other pricing issue I had was the materials/supplies. I had all my own boxes. They offered wardrobe boxes for free, but I didn't need them. Blankets and padding, also free. So the only thing I used of theirs was the shrink wrap. Mabye two decent sized rolls of it. But the supplies charge was $100. So $167 for 4.37 miles and $100 for two rolls of Saran Wrap. That just feels like I'm being cheated which I don't like. Even at $50, that would have been pricey, but I'd chalk it up to cost of business but $100 just felt excessive and there wasn't any real way of quantifying it - it was just Materials $100. And after 9 hours (well 8 and a half) I just wanted to be done. Plus my dog had run off down the street and I needed to go find her. So I paid it, and waited two weeks to review so that I'd have perspective and not just be left with that taste in my mouth.
As I said, the work was exemplary and the price over all was less than what I had been quoted elsewhere, but the way they arrived at the last couple hundred of that felt pretty crappy.

This most recent move was the most difficult move I've experienced because we were moving to a house on a hill. They had to do two loads AND the guys had to carry heavy boxes and furniture up a steep drive, up a set of uneven stone steps and a lot of stuff had to go up even further on the steep hillside. It was not fun, I didn't envy them and everyone was exhausted. But during the entire time Dennis and his team had a smile on their face, a positive can-do attitude and didn't hesitate when they had to carry yet another heavy load up several flights of hilly stone steps. 9 hours later, smiles and positive attitudes were still there. You can't imagine how much of a difference it makes.
I would enthusiastically recommend Sunshine Boys Moving Co.
Our experience with Sunshine Boys Moving & Storage was great from start to finish. Booking the appointment was quick and easy.Joe Brooks took the order and was friendly and helpful. He explained the charges up front and although the initial quote seemed high, Joe reviewed each item with me and also said there was a 5% Angie's List discount., which was an added incentive to select them.
I received a written estimate via email and a call the day before re-confirming the appointment. On the the 21st I got a text from Ray,one of the movers letting me know they were on their way. Ray and Sergio arrived right on time and were quick, professional, and efficient. They took care to wrap fragile items and carefully moved boxes and furniture.
We were very pleased with this company and I would recommend them to anone who needs professional help with moving.
"To whom it may concern We were contacted by Ms. [member name removed] to pick up and move her Piano from Oakland CA to Long Beach CA. When we arrived to pick up the piano Ms. [member name removed] was not home and she was already in Long Beach CA. The contractors at her home showed the movers the piano and told them that this is it!!! The movers picked up the piano and deliver it the next day to me. [member name removed] in long Beach. Ms [member name removed] forgot to tell the contractor that there is also a Bench and that it is NOT by the piano but in another room… This was clearly not our mistake and we would be more than happy to bring the bench also for the same price if she would only say that… Due to the large distance 400 miles or so we could not just go back and take the bench but such a small item could easily be shipped in a box by UPS and we would be happy to cover that if needed. Other than that we are going out of our way every single day to accommodate our clients’ needs and requests."
