We needed some major electrical work and obtained 3 bids. We chose Higher Power Electric because Mike is very knowledgable, friendly and the price was good.
PROS: arrived on time, gets started early and works all day. Mike and crew is super nice and easy to work with. obtained permits and made corrections to pass inspection.
Knows how to work with the city. Willing to investigate and figure things out. Responds quickly to all calls and emails. Will do extra little things to improve the job.
CONS: 1. We contracted for dedicated circuits for the kitchen, living room and front office however I was told only circuits for the kitchen and front office were installed, wasnt told about this until the job was complete and nothing deducted for this
2. We added $1685 worth of additional work to the original bid to include replacing 3 light fixtures, installing a new garbage disposal where one does not exist, mount and wire in a whole house surge protector, replace electrical sockets, install 2 exterior lights.
It ended up that the garbage disposal could not be installed and he stated that only accounted for $65 of the total. We felt like this should have been the biggest part of the additional $1685 not just $65. In addition, the surge protector was not installed and he would only deduct an additional $65.
He stated that once contracted he does not make deductions but eventually deducted the $130.
He stated that he did a list of additional work and went above and beyond to replace that work however he never spoke to us about doing any additional work to replace the work that could not be completed, we were never given an option on what additional work to do if any. The extra work was just done and he told us about it after and expected full payment.
It was our mistake for not having a written price breakdown for each item before hand so that the price could have just been deducted without dispute. The prices just didnt add up for this undiscussed additional work trade - an example from the list of additional work stated that he added an additional outlet valued at $125 but installing the new garbage disposal where one didnt exist was valued at only $65???
We just settled for the $130 deduction and the additional undiscussed / unagreed upon work and moved on as we just wanted to job over at this point.
two days after the work was completed, one of the new light switches stopped working. I asked him when he could come back to repair it and he stated some date 2 weeks away, this was not acceptable as we were having guests for the holiday. He stated he could send someone sooner if we contracted for additional work. Huh? He eventually agreed to come sooner and repaired the light switch.
I also asked about an outlet that was installed, the outlet was not level and he stated that because of the age of wiring and wall that we should be happy that it's even in there, the old one was level before though.
Also, waste management would not pick up our compost bin, I noticed there were many materials from the job that were placed in there, none of which are compostable; wires, metal parts, boxes and such. I had to pick all of these materials from our compost including some pretty disgusting things...this was a surprise as we never discussed any materials being left at the property, esp not in our compost bin. he stated that he was not aware this happened and apologized. He offered to install an additional outdoor outlet when he came back but this never happened.
basically you will be fine using this company as long as you get a price breakdown for each item in case there is some part / item that can not be completed you will not have a dispute on what will be deducted.

I couldn't be more happy with the work done by HPE. It is incredibly refreshing to do business with a company that documents clear contracts prior to the start of the job, confirms appointments, shows up on time, arrives completely prepared, and doesn't leave the worksite until the job is 100% done (in my case that was 8 P.M. !). Not only did they do high quality work on what was originally scoped, but Mike identified additional electrical work that needed to be done and included them in the job at no extra cost. He makes sure his journeymen are will trained through OJT and formal classes and it's obvious they respect him and enjoy their jobs - sure indicators of his high ethics and kindness. I would definitely recommend HPE without hesitation and plan to hire them myself for future projects.
