Up front, he met with us at our convenience, spent a lot of time explaining the different flooring options (e.g. the difference between traditional and engineered wood, and the different types of engineered wood flooring, what cork is like), how different wood types and colorings would look, and so on. He also was very willing to talk about how he works. He explained what things would be difficult and could add costs, ways to save money, and how he would minimize disruption. He gave me a preliminary quote, took some measurements, and called me the next day with a firm price for the labor (he quotes the labor separately from the wood).

We had selected a wood from one source, he found another source for the same wood and got it for us for less--no markup. His end price was exactly as quoted (even though we asked for a couple small extras), and he came in on time. **Note the total price shown includes everything---wood, other materials, labor, and taxes.

The floor just looks great.

I'd highlight one example of his craftsmanship. There was a closet off the hallway he worked on. In it, there was a opening to a crawlspace. Mike built a trap door, with a fitted frame, for the crawlspace. It's so much nicer than what was there, and he didn't charge extra for this.

Finally, I would point out that Mike is great to work with. He works alone, so perhaps his jobs aren't as fast as those with a crew, but he works so efficiently that we were amazed how fast things got done. He is willing to work weekends, very professional interfacing with other contractors (we had a painter working in the same areas at the same time), and flexible. He answered all kinds of questions, was friendly to our little boy, and we felt we could leave him in our home alone all day without worrying about anything.

I've re-read this and it may sound too good to be true, but as I pointed out above, we didn't know Mike before this job. We would highly recommend him.

Mike was referred to us by a co-worker who had him install flooring in her whole house. Mike was referred to her by her boss, who had Mike install hardwood flooring in two houses. Mike came to our house three times prior to the install to consult on different flooring types and colors. He was very patient and greatly increased our knowledge, which really helped with the difficult, and sometimes overwhelming process of choosing flooring. He worked to find the best price and was flexible with timing of the install. Mike made the process virtually effortless. He suggested that we keep some of the heavier furniture in one room while he did the other. He installed in one room and then we switched out the furniture. He started on Wednesday with demo and crack repair and was done by Sat. morning. He installed approximately 730 sq. ft. of hardwood flooring. His rates were very reasonable, and he did not mark up the flooring or supplies. He did all the work himself as a one man team, working long hours. We are completely satisfied with the work and love the new floor! Mike is top notch and knows his stuff! He put the pieces of flooring with the most "character" in the most visible areas, and it looks great.
