William Merrell Construction

The work itself was pretty poor.   After the foundation work was completed, we found that the house continued to settle dramatically and is now quite tilted toward the side where he worked.  The patio he replaced due to rot started cracking as it settled, causing water to leak in through the drain or through the cracks in the stucco which we had to seal over and over again.  He totally destroyed the garden, landscaping, and irrigation system.  The "step" he created to step onto the patio was not properly tiled, so pieces of tile would constantly fall off.  The driveway sealing work he did developed potholes again almost immediately.
The work took far longer than he suggested, and he would always be asking for payments ahead of completing the actual work.  In fact, when I found lots of issues with his work, he told me I needed to finish paying for everything with a promise that he would fix it.  I only held about $1k, and he did some minor fixes but the major problems were still to be found.
But the worst of all, as I find out 6 years later, is that he FAILED to pay one of the subcontractors.  Call this a lesson learned, but the subcontractor put a mechanics lien on my house because Merrell failed to pay.
My suggestion is to totally avoid this guy.
