After employing a couple of handymen who were unsatisfactory, I bit the bullet and hired Mick, a general contractor recommended by a neighbor who'd hired him to install some burglar-proofing.  You get what you pay for.  Mick charges $80.00/hour or, for larger jobs, by the job.  My experience with handymen has been that, while they may charge less, often they attempt work that they are not qualified to do and/or do a poor job.  In addition, a home repair may seem simple but often creativity and ingenuity have to be applied, especially in an old, no longer "square" home.  Mick corrected a prior handyman's work:  replaced a lock on my gate that stopped working 2 mos after install (the gate shifts position) and corrected a sliding screen that had been left in a mess (installed backwards, didn't close, rubber liner left unfinished and more).  Mick had to do quite a bit of adjusting to get the screen to slide properly and lock.  Mick also replaced the lock on my glass slider.  I was afraid the whole door would have to be replaced!  It meant a lot to me that Mick made room for me in a busy schedule, that I could accurately communicate with him and that he was able to advise me regarding my options.  He is a total professional, even brought all the right tools for the job the first time!  I look forward to working with him again.
