I received a 1941 Steinway console piano that had sat for several years without being played. It had 5 sticky / stuck keys. Mr. Snyder removed the part that contained all the hammers and action. After a thorough examination, he informed me that the hammers should all be re-pinned and that just working on the stuck keys would just be a short term solution and that eventually other keys would have problems. He quoted me $1250 for the repair plus $150 more for tuning. Although a little stunned at the price, I told him to proceed. I received another call from call two days later saying several of the brass flanges had cracked and again, and he could just replace the ones that had cracked to save money, or, (you guessed it) replace all of them at the same time he re-pinned the hammers. That would be another $150 or so to the price. Although it was really more that I could spend on it, I figured that I could put it on a credit card in order to finance it. Imagine my surprise when I found out that no, Mr. Snyder doesn't take plastic at present, and that he was planning on getting around to setting it up someday. I wrote him a check and he was nice enough (he should be at his prices) to wait until I was able to call him and let him know there was enough money in the account to cover the check. He's a nice enough man and a pro and like pros everywhere. they don't come cheap.
How does the piano sound? Well a lot better of course and while I'm not familiar with the Steinways in general it seems to have good sound quality overall. He also cleaned up some other tuner's attempt to unstick the keys using graphite paste - a bad choice.
He is always punctual. He will call if he'll be late. He also calls the prior day to confirm the appointment.
He tuned the piano in one hour. The piano sounds absolutely spectacular. He tuned it for me about 8 months ago. I've used Cecil Snyder for my last five or six tunings. I will continue to call on him for my piano needs. He's really good.
Besides his talent of tuning pianos, he is a very polite, nice, gentle, articulate, and helpful man. He's a real gentleman.
We had him tune the piano and it was clear he's an expert with professional equipment. He was meticulous in his approach. It gave us great peace of mind to know the piano was in such capable hands. Speaking of which, an hour or so later, we were drawn into the room by what I'm assuming is his signature and quot;testand quot; song. The song was impressive, but the rich, pure sound of the piano was even more so.
We had him back the next week to clean the piece. He disassembled parts of it carefully, polished the wires, cleaned the hammers and brought the warm wood grain out. It's now a beautiful-sounding focal point of our living room. We look forward to having him back next year for the next incremental tuning.
