A-1 DECK & COATING

If all you want to do is to have a deck re-coated, and price is no object, the people whom A-1 hires work very hard, do a good job and try very hard to satisfy the customer. However, they do not claim to be carpenters.
If you want anything more, such as repairs, go somewhere else.
When it turned out that I needed to have all of the wooden railings replaced I left a message with A-1 suggesting that we get a carpenter involved. I got no response. The decking guys tore out the old  railings.  Lumber started to arrive, but it was the wrong length and width. Fortunately I was able to catch that. Next day the right lumber arrived but no carpenter. Again A-1 was unable to help. Rather than stand around we found a neighbor down the street who has done some carpentry and he agreed to help us out. The guys from A-1 agreed to pay him. Unfortunately he had never seen the balcony before the deck guys tore it out, so he didn't know exactly what he was supposed to build. I spent the next two days supervising and explaining what I wanted, and occasionally loaning some tools. After he was done there was some disagreement over how much he should get paid. Rather than have a neighbor upset with me i made up the difference myself.

When it was all finally finished A-1 sent the invoice along with the workers for them to collect the money. As far as I know they have never seen the job since bidding it.
After a lot of caulking and painting it looks pretty good, but never again. Next time I hire the guys who are going to do the work face to face. not some guy who then hires some other guys and adds a high  overhead/profit markup.
