Description of Work: HughesNet is a satellite internet service provider. In my rural location they are the only option for internet service except dialup. While they are definitely faster than dialup their speed varies considerable over the day. During the late afternoon and early evening, when I suspect more people are on, it slows to the point of being worthless and unusable. The rest of the time it's okay but no where near as fast as Comcast, for instance, which I had before moving to the country. It's also expensive - to install and the monthly charge - more than any alternative. Calls for service are extremely frustrating, going to India, with little real help unless you can convince them to put you in the que for US technical service. Also, and and extremely annoying, you are limited in the total amount you can download in a 24 hour period. If you exceed the limit you are slowed to a snails pace for about the next 24 or 30 hours. They say it's more but in practise the limit is about 100MB. This means you can't download larger files such as new software, large program updates or movies, etc. If you try, it basically stops when it hits the limit and is then useless for the next 24 hours or more. All in all a very expensive and unsatisfactory internet alternative unless you just have no other choice but dialup. Consumer Reports rated it dead last in their survey and so would I. Needless to say when DSL or cable becomes available here they'll have me as a customer the next day.

The guy was a litte strange, but he actually got to our town and did his job. Other service providers wouldn't even go near our little town because of the snow. The Hughesnet guy came regardless. Yes, he complained a lot, but the job got done. The internet is awesome, it works perfectly, and it's actually pretty fast considering it's satellite. The Hughesnet people followed up with a phone later on to make sure everything was ok. I would definitely recommend this service to other people. Yes, purchasing the equipment is pretty pricy - about 500 dollars, and there was a fee for having to travel so far, but the monthly service cost is about 50 bucks.
Description of Work: A man traveled from Salt Lake City to Pine Valley, UT (about 4 hours) to hook up satellite internet. He installed a reciever/transmitter on our property and hooked up all the wires.

The service was terrible. I am paying 59.99 a month for dial-up service. I was supposed to get fast service. THIS IS NOT FAST. I was not aware of getting dial-up service for 59.99. You can have people pc for 9.99 a month. They are the same speed. Before I had it installed I had to commit to a two year service contract. After it is installed and you see what you are getting, which isn't fast service you thought you were getting. You call in and they tell you that you have to double the price in order to receive faster service. They have changed there commercials to say that the computer screens are based on dial-up. When the tech support couldn't fix the problem, I am told I need a service tech to come out. That is another $120.00. They only gave me a six month warranty on the equipment they installed. All the other services that I have used only had problems on their end, not mine. Now I have to pay to have their equipment fixed. I think this company is a very difficult company to do business with. I rated them an A for punctuality because they come out so quick.
Description of Work: They are an internet provider. When I first contacted them asking for service. It was after seeing them on a T.V. add. It showed two computer screens loading, one rapidly and the other very slow. It explained how fast there service is. This was in June of 08. At the time it was $399.00 installation fee with a $100.00 rebate if you are happy with the service.
