Three months ago, knowing that we would probably be moving and that I wanted to get everything in order, I decided to get the spa jets repaired. The regular pool pump provides some water circulation in the spa, but the spa pump boosts the output from the jets to create a whirlpool / jacuzzi effect.
I asked a well-established pool company - a licensed contractor - whose customer I'd been for 15 years to evaluate. They told me my spa pump motor was bad. I asked them to replace it. They agreed to do so, made an appointment, called to cancel it, made another appointment, didn't show, etc. This went on for four weeks.
In early June, I tried another pool contractor with lots of A's from Angies' List. It took them almost two weeks to get out and install the spa pump and motor. They charged me $1080, then told me that it wasn't working because there was some other problem, and that they'd be back in a few days to resolve. Days turned into weeks. I contacted the company several times and they promised to provide an estimate and schedule an appointment, but they never did.
Three weeks after they charged me to install a non-functioning pool pump, I listed my house for sale and sold it in two days. I was desperate to solve the problem so I wouldn't have to explain the mess to the buyer, and perhaps have to negotiate a reduction in price to cover the defect.
I called a national pool chain who had helped me in the past. They're expensive but they are usually pretty good. It was July 2 and the buyer had scheduled his home inspection for July 6. The repairman looked at the problem for a few minutes, told me "we really aren't electricians - get an electrician" and charged me $110 for the visit.
By this time, I was going nuts. I have some background in electrical repair, and I knew that an electrician wouldn't be able to solve the problem. This morning, my real estate agent recommended David Pierce. Dave called me and made an appointment to come out the same day. When he got here, he listened to me, set out to solve the problem, and within 45 minutes had the problem figured out and fixed. He charged me $150 for the repair, including replacing the spa air button and using a large cylinder of compressed CO2 to clean and dry out the air tube.
Dave saved my bacon, three days before the home inspection that could have jeopardized the sale or cost me much more. He is a marvel, and I am very grateful to him. He tells me he's had over 30 years of experience troubleshooting pools. His experience was obvious just watching him work. My whole problem was getting someone who knew what he was doing, and Dave is definitely the man.
