It make sense since it is a low price. In the end, you'll get an approximate cost of the "labor" remodel. Unfortunately, nothing is written down. You won't know exactly what the real price since you'll have to look for all the material.
For me, it felt like a good starting point, but I still felt I need to investigate more. I don't want to do a design on a napkins for such a big spending.
The designer came and didn't seem to realize we bought the package from Angie's List so kept pushing for us on picking them to do the renovation work soon. My husband said that the designer sounded like he won't even bother making the design if we don't sign with them at that time. BTW, I did mention to the appointment person that we're not sure when we're doing the work, maybe 6 months or one year down the road. I had just wanted a 3D design first to capture what I have in my mind. I also emailed them before purchasing the package to see if they include measurements in the design, they said it will but it didn't.
During the session, I was trying to ask questions to see if we can put a double oven or a corner pantry but he seemed to not listen to me properly and repeatedly assured me that he will do a really nice design for me.
After over a month of the meeting, we got three pictures from different angles. It's in a PDF form, and with the heading, "Hi there this is tom from Dave's remodeling please confirm" and there was no further explanations in the email except the three pictures. What was I supposed to confirm? Since this already took so long and the pictures were underwhelming, I didn't even bother replying to them. There wasn't the double oven or microwave shelf in the design as per my request. It was okay but didn't really captured what I was thinking in my head. I think I have to find another designer that is willing to really hear what I want and give me real ideas and input.
We got a discount of $500 in our contract and felt comfortable to start the work, since we had over a year thinking to do it and getting estimates here and there we felt it was time to do it.
They work efficiently and work around the original idea he had for our bathroom, even though it took an extra week of work, we felt very satisfied with the results.
Arrogant, incompetent and unprofessional are the nicest things we can say about them. Not one thing was done right the first time. The counter is lovely, but it?s the wrong size because nobody supervised the measuring. The cabinets we finally got, which were what we picked out in the first place but the manager said were ?unavailable,? are well-made but way too long for the space because it turned out the manager had never measured the ceiling height! We have more storage than we expected, because they used the pantry cabinet that didn?t fit to give us a second one, but the one worker who adjusted and installed it had to come back many times to get it to look even semi-well done. The last month has consisted of a couple of hours of work a week, followed by long lists of things that still needed to be fixed. The worker said the company was not
providing him with the proper materials, so every time he said he was done, we found more things he?d ?forgotten.? We ended up buying the tile grout ourselves, after reminding them for two months that it might need to be special ordered. It has been the most exasperating experience?every single thing was done in the cheapest, dumbest way possible and therefore had to be redone multiple times. The cabinet over the refrigerator took four tries, and it?s still messy, looks like we did it ourselves. And now they think we should give them a good rating because they did (almost) everything we finally asked for, after we bugged them almost daily in writing. They rarely answered our phone calls, and never called us to keep us informed. Meanwhile, the bushes in the back yard are full of paint, the patio has paint all over it, the deck has a permanent stain and there are cosmetic problems everywhere but we just gave up trying to get the last bits fixed. Here's the original review, from March:
Warning! All the A ratings are for Dave himself, in Tarzana. At least some of the Fs are for the Sunnyvale branch. Unfortunately they had not been posted five weeks ago when our job began. Through the incompetence of their one workman, the cabinets were wrecked, so for twice as much money they promised us much better, semi-custom cabinets. So far all we have are one
window, four can lights from Home Depot and a slapdash paint job where we were forced to pick the color without a cabinet sample. And after we started paying them big money, all their answers have been no: no, you can?t have the color cabinets you want; no you can?t have the door style you picked yesterday but must have a different one; no you can?t have four drawers (this only when they had already arrived, despite many calls, photos and emails that made it clear we wanted four drawers); no pull-out cutting board (ditto); no electrician to bring the outlets up to code while the room is empty, but wait until the cabinets are in and it will be much more difficult; no, you?re not getting the countertop specified in the contract. This last was particularly galling because we needed a sample of the quartz to match the paint, which they provided without saying it was different from what we?d ordered and now they say the original choice is not available. It is nearly the same we think, but not telling us is just dishonest. We did have the problem another member had with just a hand-drawn cabinet setup, but fortunately I guess the cabinets were so terribly made that they had to be sent back anyway and we got to have something that actually fits in the kitchen. Again, though, we were told there was only one possible solution and we had to do it their way.
