I took it to ClickAway. The servicemen there kept it overnight to analyze the problem. After I authorized them to recover the information, they took about a week to do so. They were able to recover an amazing amount from the drive; they probably got all the files but did not recover the applications. They also took care of recycling the now-useless unit.
They were quite honest in telling me that, although they could install a new drive, it would be better for me financially to buy a new Mac. They didn't try to sell me extra and quot;services.and quot; They didn't charge me a separate evaluation fee ($99) since they performed the information recovery ($198). They were quite straightforward and honest. I felt I was in knowledgable hands, and I would definitely use their services again—though, understandably, I hope I never have to! If I do, though, I know where to go.

I'm giving them a D on this incident because what they said and what they recommended was completely off the mark, but I should probably add a caveat. Talking with them at the store, they seem well intentioned and talk a very good line. For simpler problems, they may well have good service, even though they appeared way over their heads on this one. They're very hard to figure out. To some degree they may think they know more than they do. (When one of the techs started telling me how the and quot;needleand quot; in the disk drive could make errors on the disk, it really took me aback!) In any event, I'll let you be the judge. This is what happened to me. And BTW, the computer now seems to be running just fine.
