In searching for a new HVAC system for our home, we contacted several bay area specialist, having received quotes for both traditional duct systems and ultra-efficient ductless systems (also known as "mini-splits"). The main requirement, aside from efficiency, was being able to control the temperature in multiple rooms, creating various zones. As we learned more about what it would take to make a traditional, duct HVAC system cool and heat multiple zones in our home, we became more and more interested in a mini split system. Having grown up with a traditional HVAC, duct system in Southern California, I was well aware of its limitations (single zone), energy costs, and noise levels. Of course, with newer technology, many of these concerns have been reduced. However, one remaining concern was noise. I did not want to hear or feel the compressor turning on. On that note, we began exploring the range of mini split systems. There are many brands, but one that we kept reading about with favorable reviews was the Mitsubishi "Mr. Slim" system. The newer range of Mr. Slim technology offers both cooling and heating, and more importantly, you can manually set the temperature for each room that has an air handler (the piece mounted on the wall) so that you are not cooling unnecessary areas of the home. Next, we had to determine who was going to install our unit. We went directly to the Mitsubishi website and looked for diamond certified installers in our area. We called a few, and some were almost unwilling to even speak to us about these Mr. Slim products, pushing traditional HVAC systems our way. Then, we arranged for Air Maze to provide us with an estimate. Ken arrived earlier than the scheduled time (when does that ever happen), and brought a computer and portable printer to provide us with a quote instantly, on the spot, and a reasonable one for that matter. That was impressive! We decided on a 36,000 BTU compressor and four air handlers, all capable of cooling and heating. As room sizes vary, some rooms received smaller units, while larger areas more powerful units. Once we committed to having the job move forward, Anthony arrived as the lead contractor to do the installation. He was pleasant and always took great pride to explain what he was doing, how long the scope of a given task would take, and most importantly, to make sure any area he was working in looked as though he was never there (vacuum and all). They ran a new electrical line out to the compressor, to ensure it had ample, dedicated power. All exterior work was done with meticulous detail, and whenever there was a question as to placement, Anthony always asked my opinion (easier to get it right the first time than to do it over). The job from beginning to end took about 1 full week. This included a couple of follow up appointments just to make sure that everything was working properly. Ken also provided assistance with getting the mechanical permit pulled, needing to reach out to Mitsubishi directly to obtain detailed documentation to satisfy the city's request. Overall, my wife and I are extremely happy with the installation and capabilities of the system. The air handlers can be operated on a whisper quiet mode, or turned up to provide max cooling on warm days. Standing outside next to the compressor while in operation, you cannot even hear that anything is running. You have to look to see that the fan is moving to know that the system in on. On cooler days and nights, the heat is also more than adequate. It has been a few months of using the system, and one thing is for certain, our PG&E bill barely went up, a huge plus for this ultra-efficient system! Impressive! I cannot recommend this system enough or for Air Maze to handle the installation. Thank you Air Maze. Special thanks to Ken, Anthony and Nelda!
