I called Peter about 12:30 pm on a Monday to schedule a time for him to come by. He said he had a 1:30 pm appointment and so could come by at 2:30 pm. He arrived a little over an hour late. Still, same-day fast service. Peter first looked at the back of the TV to see the production date. The TV is so old that it didn't have one. He then pointed out on the screen vertical lines that he explained showed that the picture tube is going bad and that it doesn't make sense to repair the TV. Finding a replacement picture tube would be a challenge and that it would be expensive. (NOTE: The owner of another TV repair store that I had also called advised me over the phone that there are no replacement picture tubes available, so mine would have to be rebuilt. The cost would be $98 for the service call plus a shipping cost to send the picture tube to Texas where it would be rebuilt at a cost of $250 plus the cost to ship the picture tube back plus the cost for the labor to reinstall it. I told Peter I was skeptical about the quality and reliability of the new TV's and not sure if it made sense to spend $$ on a new flat panel TV. So Peter offered that if I was interested, some of his customers who are buying the new flat panel wall-mount TV's will be getting rid of their newer console TV's, which I can buy for a reasonable price. He even offered to bring one over for me to see and to hook it up so that I could test it out and also said he would warranty the TV for one year. Unfortunately, I think 50" is too big for the room. Either way, guess I know what I'll be buying myself for Christmas...
Description of Work: I have an OLD (60+ years) RCA XL-100 solid state console TV. The picture is gradually getting darker. Peter diagnosed that the picture tube is going bad and advised me that it doesn't make sense to repair it. I need to get a replacement.
