I have been going to TPF for years both as a residential customer and as a landscaping business owner. It was good to see how vibrant and innovative they still are. New buildings are going in as they expand their services. I have been to one of their classes also and find them very helpful and reasonably priced. This day I bought some plants and wildflower seeds for my own yard. I was asked in the yard whether I needed help and the employee answered my questions fully, and promptly wrote up my order when I was ready. The best times for finding rare plants or filling large orders are when they have their fall and spring sales. Otherwise they usually have a good stock of commonly used native plants.
Description of Work: Sold me native plants and seeds.

As a member and supporter of theirs, I am always satisfied, I have learned a great deal and am very excited about transforming my garden. Theodore Payne is a foundation which has education and fantastic plant selection for those who want to go with natives. The people are very helpful and I have nothing but praise for this valuable institution.
Description of Work: I go to Theodore Payne nurseries all the time--I am a member. It's a very important organization which educates, services, and provides material for native California gardens and habitat restoration. I'm gradually converting my entire property from wasteful, water guzzling lawn to gorgeous California natives requiring minimal water and providing wonderful wildlife habitat.

Description of Work: Excellent choice of native plants complete with information on drought-tolerant plants appropriate for specific soil types. Staff members were very friendly and helpful. I have not taken their classes yet, or used any of their referrals for landscaping designers, but plan to do so in the future.

There are several different instructors for the landscape design classes at Theodore Payne Foundation, so you can chose which designer you want, or you can take classes from several designers. The instructors for the classes I took were Armstrong and Walker. They do a great job of explaining the principles of designing your individual space considering the light and soil and microclimate, then help in selecting the CA native plants that will perform best there. We drew plans and left the class with a workable design for our yards. I can't afford to do everything at once, so I keep going back to purchase plants. The staff in the nursery is very knowledgeable and they are glad to help. Members get discounts on classes and plants, so a membership quickly pays for itself. It's also a great place to take a picnic lunch to enjoy in the picnic area under the Sycamores. I sometimes go there just to have lunch and stroll through the grounds. Dogs are allowed on leash. The walk up wildflower hill is a great hike and not too strenuous for most people.
Description of Work: I've taken landscape design classes at Theodore Payne Foundation, bought my plants there, and then done the planting myself or had my gardener help with the planting.

T. Payne has an excellent selection, though the lay out of the selection is somewhat random. There were not many employees around to explain the characteristics of the different plants. If you know what you want this is a very good and friendly place. I left something behind during check out (too busy keeping my eye on my two little ones) , and they were very helpful in returning it to me.

The landscape design class is a lot of fun and a good challenge. I'm not only learning many things I need to know, I'm also making plans I'll actually be able to implement, and am looking at my small suburban property in ways I've never done before. We've now completed two of the three sessions, and while I understand that years of study and hands-on work would be the ideal preparation for what I'm trying to do, I know I'll leave this class with a workable plan that will improve my enjoyment of my yard right away.
Description of Work: The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is not only a great source for an enormous variety of CA native plants, but also provides a valuable range of classes taught by professionals with years of experience in landscaping with CA natives. Classes are attended by home owners, apartment dwellers, birders, professional gardeners, or anyone who wants information on how to work with CA natives. The education building is heated and air-conditioned, and the classroom accommodates groups of various sizes. I've taken a number of classes there, some of which include getting out of the classroom and onto the extensive grounds where plants can be seen in natural settings as well as potted in the nursery areas. My present class is a three-part landscaping design class (totaling 12 hours) with five students and two instructors, so we get lots of individual attention to our projects. Each student is a homeowner who wants beautiful landscaping that thrives in our Mediterranean climate. We live in different parts of the L.A. basin and have different types of sites, so our needs vary. We're all learning how to work with our particular situations. We've learned what some of the most valuable reference books are, and can buy them in the Theodore Payne sales office. I've also taken a container gardening class, an introduction to CA native plant horticulture, a class on how to kill that inappropriate water-craving lawn and prepare for a real residential garden, and a class on care and maintenance of CA native landscapes. The list of classes is posted on the website. I plan to take many more.

I found and purchased six very nice, suitable plants. Theodore Payne Foundation is located in a lovely outdoor area nestled against the foothills. I had a great time just browsing around and looking at the variety of attractive plants. There's even a picnic area. I plan to return again soon.
Description of Work: I went to Theodore Payne to purchase native plants for a "dry shade area." The staff was very helpful in pointing me to the right plants.

I purchased a membership which more than paid for itself in discounts. The class I attended was informative and enjoyable.
Description of Work: I purchased California native plants for my yard and attended a class called "How to Kill Your Lawn." Theodore Payne Foundation is a non-profit organization that preserves, cultivates, and promotes the use of California native plants. Staff/volunteers in the nursery section are very helpful and well informed. They refer to the correct person to answer questions. The plants are labeled with soil, sun and water needs, and the size of the mature plant.

I had just moved to a new house and needed to do some landscaping, but on a budget. I looked around for drought tolerant/ native California plants and found this gem! I took a landscaping with natives class, it was great! I have continued to buy seeds, plants, and more plants. The people who work and volunteer at the foundation are dedicated to helping educate the public (like me) about the importance of planting native plants. I really recommend going there even if you don't have a large garden to plan. They even have a picnic area to sit and relax.
Description of Work: Bought plants, took a class. The price above is an estimate of how much I've spent over many trips.

I can't say enough about how the staff and volunteers at Theodore Payne went out of their way to help me garden with native plants. When I was started gardening with natives a few years ago, they held my hand and talked me through the process. I had never gardened before, let alone with natives, and they were incredibly enthusiastic and helpful. Unlike most chain nurseries, the staff and volunteers know what they're doing. Even the customers help out if you have a question!
Description of Work: Staff assisted me with selecting the right plants for my back and front yards. They gave me ideas about what to plant and where, based on sun/shade, soil type (clay, sandy, etc.), location (inland, coastal, etc.) and what I wanted to achieve (formal garden, bird/hummingbird attraction, butterfly, etc.). They gave me advice on how to care for native plants and plant them.
