Excavation
The actual hook up seems to have been done correctly. The work site was a residential front yard. The job took longer than expected because of mechanical problems of their equipment. Our biggest complaint is that while we were out of town, the company brought in and used , in our opinion, unclean fill dirt from their workyard that is totally inappropriate for a residential front yard.
While there was no expectation to be given planting soil for backfill, it is really disappointing to find that the soil is such a heavy clay that water pools on it for days. Furthermore, there are sizeable chunks of asphalt and concrete debris mixed in with this really heavy heavy clay. Nothing will grow in this stuff and it is like the La Brea Tar Pits if you try to walk on it when it is wet.
The company will not rectify the situation and contractually they likely would not need to, however, it seems contrary to good business practice to create an additional landscaping expense for a customer by using backfill material that renders the area unusable for its original purpose (a lawn)!
We present this as a cautionary description to future customers of County Sanitation in hopes that some specification for type of backfill be made up front and that vigilance be practiced by the property owner throughout the process. We will be wiser in the future.
