I got four bids. Daniel was neither the highest nor the lowest. However, I decided to hire him because 1) he used to do tile work for a large home builder and it turns out I knew his boss who verified that his work was good; 2) he said he could do the work in three days starting on a Friday and 3) he uses grout that does not stain, but is harder to work with.
I showed him the tiles that I wanted to use and he purchased them for me. He showed me a grout chart and he said he had to special order the grout because it was a color that was not widely used. The grout is a new grout called "Fusion" and some of the other persons who gave me bids were not familiar with it. I have been told that this grout is fabulous because no matter what you spill on it, it does not stain. It is expensive, but since this is a rental property, I wanted this grout.
Daniel was very responsive by email or phone. He showed up on the appointed day with his brother and nephew and the three of them worked all day the first day removing carpet in the master bath and laying hardyback as a base; and removing old tile in the other bath. The next day they cut and laid the tile in a diamond shape as I had requested. The tiles were 18 X 18 and I was hesitant to use them in the smaller bath, but Daniel assured me that they would look great. They did!
The next morning, which was a Sunday, they came back for about two hours to lay the grout.
The job was done right. He laid the tile up next to the baseboards so I didn't have to demolish the baseboards and lay new ones. There are some areas where the bottom of the baseboards are slightly torn from the demolition, but Daniel did the best he could. I was not willing to remove the baseboards and install new ones.
Overall, the job was well done. I would hire him again and would recommend him to others.
