"What this customer never quite understood was, when floating to six different heights which were fixed, of course it can't be perfect. The main slab with wood was 21/2 inches, the kitchen was lower, the slab height was 13/4". The sliding glass door was only 1", the laundry was 0", and still we cut the door. The bedroom floors connected at 1/2" on left and 1" on right. It was also over 41/2 inches deep in the middle. A bowl shape. These spots were fixed and I had to meet there, no matter what. I did a great job. The 36 wheelbarrow load did hurt my back. The job looks beautiful, and I met all the requirements with the float. Of course it was not level. That would have been 3 inches up the slider and worse at the laundry door. That was unaceptable. In a perfect world this would be flat. That 70 year old house with numerous add-ons could not be flat and still connect at the edges. Two extra days on the float, with refloating each day when necessary. I did float in the kitchen, too. It had 2x2 tiles and was very unlevel to the family room. I added 1/2 " to zero at the wood on the far side. The homeowner was never home so she can't say what prep we did. I explained over and over to the husband. If I float level, it will be 3 inches above the door. It must end at 1" so that with the tile it is below the door runner, as it is. I have photos of this job, because the results are actually a miracle. Noone could have given a perfect install, under these conditions. I actually did a great job. The customer never really understood the variables. The job looks great, the lines are perfect, and the float is correct to each adjoining edge. The area I removed was where I asked the husband (in his 70s, and unsure what to do) chose a slope that she didn't like. I use a ten foot straight edge, so I asked him, straight across here, but this make this, look like this. etc. Whatever he chose, I went with. Member is virtually disabled and is hyper sensitive, so I revised the slopes to accomodate her. That was not a mistake, it was accomodation. No different from lowering a shower dam, or even removing it, to accomodate an invalid who can't step over the height.. As it was I set the height at the slider to work perfectly when, next year, she is in a wheelchair. The job is solid and will last forever, which is our guarantee. If the job had been less than perfect for the variables involved, she would never have said she was happy, which she did. Now that I'm gone she has forgotten the parameters. The job is beautiful. It's in my gallery. It will last forever. Two weeks is about what I said. 2 days for tearout. 3 days to deliver cement and sand and float 36 wheelbarrows full. 4 days to install (not one wall was straight, or diagonal. All were 10, 20, and 30 degree angels. 1 day to grout and finish. That was my quote before and that is what it took. I did not go home after several hours. I made more than 10 trips to RCP to pick up sand and cement (about 10,000 pounds for three cubic yards of sand alone). It's true I complained about my back, but never to her since she wasn't there. I stayed right on schedule, she forgets, She never quite understood that there is more to tile than just installing it. Prep and float take just as long as the install. The husband made decisions the wife can't live with, that's all"
